Aug. 15 and 16

The M-CHS class of 1963 is having its 50th class reunion Aug. 15 and 16. There are several people organizers are unable to locate.

Aug. 17

The Mildred Friendship Club of Cortez/Dolores is sponsoring a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 26336 County Road P, one-fourth mile west of Highway 145 (west of Four Seasons Nursery).

Proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward a scholarship fund for Dolores High School.

Southwestern Colorado Livestock Association and Southwestern Cowbelles will host a Summer Social on Aug. 17 at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center.

The Ute Mountain Roundup Rodeo will be holding its royalty contest on Aug. 17 at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ages 8-24 are encouraged to try out. Must have a horse for the contest. For more information or to get an application, contact Ashley Hamilton at 739-3765.

On Saturday, Aug. 17, at 9 a.m. at the Ponderosa Restaurant, 108 S. 8th St. in Dolores, the League of Women Voters will present a program on an issue that will appear on the November ballot. Bill Thompson, chair of the Montezuma County Hospital District Board (MCHD) will discuss why local voters will be asked to approve easing of restrictions imposed on the district by Colorado law. The restrictions are limiting the ability of the district to obtain state grants for equipment that benefits the hospital and the community. No tax increase is involved. Come join the Bridge Emergency Shelter for its first annual homeless awareness walk on Saturday, Aug. 17, with registration from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the playground at Parque de Vida. Walkers can register on the Bridge’s website at (www.thebrigdeshelter.org) or by calling the shelter at 565-9808 or on the day of the event. The first 50 people to sign up get a free T-shirt.

Aug. 21

The Piñon Project is offering an “Eating Smart - Being Active” class for anyone who wants to learn about preparing healthier meals and bringing a basic level of activity into their lives.

Kelly Proctor, as facilitator will lead the group through eight lessons designed to help them shop, cook and enjoy entry-level activity.

Home canners are invited to bring pressure canner lid with dial gauges to the Montezuma County Extension office on Thursday, Aug. 22, from 1 to 4:30 p.m., for free testing. The office is located in Room 102 of the Montezuma County Courthouse, 109 W. Main Street in Cortez.

Call for entries! Heart & Soul Cortez is teaming up with the Cortez Cultural Center to host the Art & Soul Cortez Art Exhibit from Friday, Aug. 23 to Saturday, Sept. 14. Entries are due no later than Friday, Aug. 16.

Aug. 26

The Piñon Project will hold a 14-week “Strengthening Families” parenting class that will begin weekly on Monday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at The Piñon Project, 300 N. Elm St., Cortez. The class is for families with children between 12 and 18 years old.There is no cost to participants. Enrollment is limited, call soon!

The Piñon Project is pleased to offer a “Responsible Fatherhood” class that will begin on Wednesday, August 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., at The Piñon Project, 300 N. Elm St., Cortez.

Dinner and child care will be provided. The curriculum is 15 weeks long. All fathers are welcome to join the program at any time.

There is no cost to participants. Enrollment is limited, call soon!

Leadership Montezuma is now taking applications for its 2013-14 class, which starts in early September. Leadership Montezuma meets once per month 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to learn and dialogue with the various organizations, public and private, that make the county and communities run.

Sept. 12

On Thursday, Sept. 12, Mesa Verde artist in residence Sue King from Lancaster, Ohio, will speak on her work as an art quilter and demonstrate the use of silk screening as a form of surface design.

Participants can make a textile postcard as a memento of their visit to the park, or screen a design on an item of their own clothing. The free event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the library downstairs at Far View Lodge, Mesa Verde National Park, and is open to all.

Supplies will be provided but participants must bring their own item of clothing, such as a T-shirt, to screen if desired.

Through September

Every Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. through September, there will be a community garage sale at Pleasant View Mercantile parking lot. Participation is free. This event is open to the public.

First Thursday

Montezuma County Republican Central Committee meets the first Thursday of every month at noon at Shiloh’s Steakhouse. Come out to hear what your Republican elected officials are up to.

The Kiwanis Club of Mesa Verde meets every Tuesday at noon at Shiloh. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.
