Kizuri Creations coming to Cortez
Lily Mutai, of Nairobi, Kenya, will talk about her ministry at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Cortez First United Methodist Church at 515 North Park St. Mutai lived in the slums of Nairobi but through her sewing skills lifted her family out of poverty. She now leads a ministry called Kizuri Creations and teaches other women to sew and to support their families.
Kizuri Creations produces ladies handbags using authentic African material. All profits from the sale of the Kizuri handbags help finance skills training for women from the slums of Nairobi. A love offering will be taken at the presentation, and half will go for Mutai’s travel expenses, and half will go toward her Kizuri Creations. The word “kizuri” means “good” in Swahili.

Church beginning study of Revelation
For 22 weeks starting Oct. 15, at 6 p.m., The Way Christian Church will study the Book of Revelation. The Way is at the Chapel on the Farm, 19927 Road 26.2 Loop, Dolores, 903-6153.
Evangelical community celebrates
Longtime Cortez residents Victor and Gloria Perez were recently installed as the senior pastors of Vida en Victoria the Spanish Foursquare Church. Daniel and Monica Prieto were also present at the ceremony.
Prieto is one of the top leaders in Foursquare. He oversees the Spanish churches in the U.S. and is on the Foursquare Cabinet, the governing body for the 70,000 Foursquare churches worldwide.
Sandra Chavez also received her pastoral license with Foursquare. Victor and Gloria Prieto and Chavez are replacing Liliana and Stuart Hanold, who started the Spanish church almost six years ago and still pastor the English church.
Liliana, who was the senior pastor of Vida en Victoria, has been promoted within the Gateway Foursquare District to the Divisional Superintendent on the Western Slope for all Spanish-speaking churches, from Wyoming to New Mexico. She will focus on her responsibilities as overseer.
The English Foursquare Church, the Family Worship Center meets at 10:30 on Sundays with a free community dinner at 6 p.m. on Thursday nights. Vida en Victoria meets at 4 p.m. on Sundays. Both meet at 500 N. Washington. Call 749-9774 or 739-9774 for information.
FLC welcomes ‘Dead Man Walking’ author
As part of the Common Reading Experience, Fort Lewis College will host a talk by Sister Helen Prejean on Tuesday, Oct. 21 in Whalen Gym. The doors open at 6:45 p.m. for the public. The event is free for everyone.
Prejean is the author of “Dead Man Walking: The Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty that Sparked a National Debate,” which is this year’s Common Reading Experience selection at FLC. The book was made famous by the 1995 movie “Dead Man Walking,” in which Susan Sarandon portrayed Sister Prejean.
The FLC Concert Choir will perform a special program for Prejean during the evening.
