Expect delays on U.S. 160
The Colorado Department of Transportation began resurfacing U.S. Highway 160 west of Hesperus on May 10, but beginning this week, the project will begin causing traffic delays.
The area designated for improvement begins two miles west of Colorado 140 at Hesperus (milepost 71.1) and covers nine miles of road west to the top of Mancos Hill, at milepost 62.
The resurfacing is expected to take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, although if the weather causes delays, work will take place on weekends. The project is scheduled to be completed mid-October.
This is a continuation of work begun in 2014. The estimated cost is $7.3 million. Between 6,700 and 6,800 vehicles travel the section every day.
Six rafters unharmed after flip and swim
A raft carrying six rafters flipped on the Animas River just downstream from Smelter Rapid at about 4 p.m. Sunday. Emergency responders were called, but the rafters were uninjured and accounted for.
A man who was aboard the raft but declined to give his name said the raft got caught in an eddy. After three rotations, the raft flipped.
The Animas River was running at 3,950 cubic feet per second at 4:30 p.m. The median for the date is 2,660 cf/s.
Teresa Collipp of Cortez was watching from Santa Rita Park when she saw the raft flip and a woman go under the water.
"We thought the party was over," she said.
Corridor discussion continues June 23
Work with CDOT on improving the Highway 160 corridor will continue with a second public input session on Tuesday, June 23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mancos Community Center.
This is a follow up meeting to begin selecting options for gateway signage, intersection improvements, access points, streetscaping, and bike and pedestrian ways.
A first meeting was held on April 23 with over 30 participants. Options discussed were slimming down roadways with medians and bike lanes, and adding landscaping.
Planning and design assistance is provided on this project by Russell Engineering of Durango.
