Annual Rodeo Dance at the American Legion



The American Legion will present the annual Rodeo Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, June 9, featuring Special Guest Danny Hale & The Legion Band. Dancing shoes are encouraged. There is a $5 cover charge.



Experimental Aircraft Association Pancake Breakfast

The Four Corners Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association is sponsoring a pancake breakfast, Saturday, June 9, at the Cortez Municipal Airport, starting at 8 a.m. Proceeds will go toward support of the local EAA Young Eagles Flight Experience, which offers children, from eight to 17 years of age, a free introductory flight. The cost of breakfast is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Parents may sign up their children for the next Young Eagles Flight Experience at the breakfast, and drawings will be held for a discovery flight for two in a Maule M-5 and two flights in a weight-shift Light Sport Aircraft. For more information, contact 560-0781 or bob@industrytc.com.




Meet and greet for Ertel, Furse



There will a meet the candidates event for Montezuma County commissioner candidate Keenan Ertel and 22nd Judicial District Attorney candidate Will Furse on Saturday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at All Weather Storage (Hwy. 160 and 29.25 Road, next to the fairgrounds). There will be barbecue — first come, first served.




Ute Mountain Roundup Rodeo Parade



Show your hometown spirit at the 82nd annual Ute Mountain Roundup Rodeo Parade on Saturday, June 9 at 5 p.m. Parades reinforce the sense of community pride and tradition and acknowledge that there are reasons to celebrate. There is something for everybody and everyone has a role including parade participants, volunteers and spectators.

This year’s parade is coordinated by the Cortez Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. There is no fee to enter and the deadline for entries is Tuesday, June 5. Entry forms can be picked up at the Colorado Welcome Center, 928 E. Main in Cortez or by calling 565-3414.




Day of fire-themed events include barbecue, All Firemen’s Ball



Support wildfire education in Southwest Colorado on Saturday, June 9 at the Dolores Fire Station. There will be free family fun during the Wildfire Field Day from 2 to 6 p.m. including face painting, kiddie train, Smokey Bear, Fire Fighter competitions, and more. The Barbecue will run from 5 to 7 p.m. with $3 burgers and dogs; kids 16 and under eat free. From 6 to 10 p.m., a beer garden featuring microbrews from Dolores River Brewery and Main Street Brewery, and wines from Guy Drew vineyards will be open and you can dance to the beat of DJ P.A. Admission starting at 6 p.m. will be $5 in advance at Blondie’s Pub and Grub or Slavens True Value in Cortez, The Dolores Food Market or Chamber of Commerce in Dolores, Zuma Natural Foods or Cox Conoco in Mancos, or $10 at the door. Montezuma Agility Dogs Club classes



The Montezuma Agility Dogs Club is offering basic obedience classes for dogs 5 1/2 months and older. The classes begin Saturday, June 9, are one hour long, and take place on Saturday mornings for six weeks. Class size is limited, registration is first-come, first-served. Trees of Trail Canyon Nursery tour



Join M-CAN and learn how to create a comfortable microclimate around your house and property by planting trees that shade, buffer and produce fruit in our low moisture environment. See more than 5,000 locally grown trees and shrubs at Trees of Trail Canyon Nursery guided by owner and certified arborist David Temple, on Saturday morning, June 9. Those interested should meet at the intersection of Roads G and J in McElmo Canyon, 7 miles west of the airport, at 9 a.m. Tour ends at noon. This event is free and open to the public. Compost 101 Workshop



Cortez Community Garden will host Compost 101. The workshop, taught by Greg Valeming, will be from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday June 9 at 1202 E. Empire, just west of the Children’s Kiva. Parking will be available on site, bring your own chair. For more information, call Bobbi at 529-0689.




Summit Ridge Women’s Club Yard Sale



Don’t miss the annual Summit Ridge Women’s Club yard sale from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 9 at 25505 Road N.6 just off Mildred Rd. in the Mildred Estates. There will be lots of good quality items priced to sell and lots of baked goods also for sale.

Since Summit Ridge is located between Dolores and Mancos, the Women’s Club alternates each year in awarding a $500 scholarship to a high school senior from one of these two towns. Money raised at the yard sale helps fund a scholarship from a Dolores or Mancos student. This year, the yard sale will raise funds to help a Mancos senior in 2013.

Meet the Baha’is and review writings



Who are the Baha’is? Baha’is are the followers of Baha’u’llah, the Glory of God for this day. We are your friends and neighbors and we’d like to meet you! In honor of the Baha’i month of Light, the Baha’is in Montezuma County invite you to an informal display of Baha’i sacred writings, literature and an opportunity to get acquainted. We will be available to answer questions on the principles of our Faith at the Cortez Library on Saturday, June 9. You are welcome to stop in anytime from 2 to 3:30 p.m. to meet some of the Baha’is, ask questions, review the literature and find the common ground of all religions. Vacation Bible School at Church of Christ

‘Introduction to QuickBooks’ workshop



The Small Business Development Center at Fort Lewis College will sponsor “An Introduction to QuickBooks” workshop on Tuesday, June 12. The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cortez Welcome Center. A brown bag lunch break will take place at noon.

Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor Bethany McManus will lead this introduction and tutorial looking at one of the most powerful accounting software packages available. Anyone interested, regardless of familiarity with QuickBooks, is invited to attend.

Telluride Repertory presents 3-person play ‘Bonn Voyage’



The Mancos Public Library, located at 211 W. First St., begins its 2012 Summer Reading Program “Dream Big at Your Library.” All students age 5-18 are invited to participate. These programs are run as a “drop in” but all children attending must enroll.

On Wednesday, June 13, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The Telluride Repertory Theater will present a three person play titled “Bonn Voyage,” about the ocean and its creatures, as seen by a wacky threesome of shipmates. Wholesome snacks will be provided during each program. Younger children may attend if accompanied by an adult throughout the program. We also conduct a reading contest bingo (for kids, teens and adults) with books of their choice as prizes for all who complete the bingo. All programs are free. Erica Sodos will bring her own brand of magic to the Cortez Public Library on Wednesday, June 13 at 2 p.m. The Boulder magician, clown and performer, will present Magical Faeries. The Dream Faerie, a.k.a. Erica, will emerge from the depths of sleep to inspire your imagination with her astonishing magic showcasing dreams and enchantments. The library is located at 202 N. Free Community Dinner on Thursday Nights



The Cortez Family Worship Center Foursquare Church invites the community to relax on Thursday nights and take a break from cooking dinner. Starting at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 14 and continuing on Thursday nights through the rest of this summer, there will be free community dinners at the church at 500 N. Piñon Project to offer free budgeting class



The Piñon Project will offer a free 5 week, 10 hour workshop called “Making Money Work For You” on Thursday evenings beginning Thursday, June 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 300 N. Elm in Cortez. A meal is provided starting at 5:30 p.m. This basic budgeting program is designed for people who are concerned about their money, whether just starting out or struggling to make it paycheck to paycheck, looking for ways to manage their debt or starting a savings plan. The workshop covers goal setting, credit & debt, various types of insurance, stretching personal resources, spending choices and creating a spending and savings plan. In addition, based on participant interest, a presentation regarding investment options, such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds will be provided.

This workshop is open to TANF eligible families who live in Montezuma County. TANF eligible participants who successfully complete all 5 sessions will receive a $50 gift card. This course is free, and licensed child care and meals will be provided free each night of the class for participants and children who are pre-registered. ‘Animal Conservation and Applied Zooarchaeology’ presentation



Visiting scholar Steve Wolverton, Ph.D., will present issues pertaining to “Animal Conservation and Applied Zooarchaeology” at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Nakai concert to benefit Mancos library



Tami Graham Presents “An evening with R. Carlos Nakai,” a benefit for the Mancos Public Library, Saturday, June 16, at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) at the Mancos Opera House.

Of Navajo-Ute heritage, R. Carlos Nakai is the world’s premier performer of the Native American flute. Since 1983, he has released over 35 albums. Nakai has earned two gold records and has received nine Grammy nominations.

The cost for the concert is $35 for general admission, $75 for VIP private reception with R. Carlos Nakai. Tickets are on sale at Southwest Sound in Durango, Mancos Public Library and Rocky Mountain One Stop in Cortez. Moetones play Stonefish for 2 year anniversary

Hymn For Her will play eclectic ‘stomp-grass punk folk’



Hymn For Her will bring their blazing live show to the Dolores River Breweryon Sunday, June 17 at 7 p.m. The Brewery is at 100 North 4th St. in Dolores.

Chamber Luncheon to address “Showrooming”



The practice of “showrooming” is here to stay — it is when shoppers hit the brick-and-mortar venues to determine whether they like an item, but then buy it cheaper elsewhere or online. Matt Mecham will address this concept and discuss ways to combat it at the Cortez Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Wednesday, June 20 at noon at Shiloh Steakhouse.

Library hosts award-winning storyteller



The next performer in the Cortez Public Library’s Summer Reading Program Family Entertainment Series is Sara Ransom. Please come see her on Wednesday, June 20, at 2 p.m. Sara is a storyteller and has been featured in festivals from New England to New Zealand. She is the daughter and granddaughter of performing storytellers. Sara has traveled worldwide in learning her craft. Sara is a winner of a National Endowment for the Arts Solo Performance Fellowship in 1991. Her international experience exhibits itself in her eclectic performances. The library is located at 202 N. Wild Country will perform first show at the Hollywood
