July theme for Cortez Library Storytime is ‘Craving Sleep’



“Craving Sleep” is the July theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays. The Saturday Storytime is held, weather permitting, at the Cortez Farmers Market on the corner of Elm and Main St. All days of any particular week will follow the same theme except on Thursdays and Saturdays there will be no craft. “Lullabies” is the subject on Saturday, July 7. “Night Lights” will be discussed on Thursday, July 12, Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14. “Counting Sheep” will be presented on Thursday, July 19, Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. “Hush Little Baby” will wrap up the month on Thursday, July 26, Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28.

For Pets’ Sake holds Pennies for Pets at the Farmers Market



For Pets’ Sake Humane Society is seeking help from the community for their fundraiser Pennies For Pets on Saturday morning, July 7, at the Cortez Farmers Market in the Montezuma County Courthouse parking lot, 109 W. Main St.

Everyone who cares about animals can bring their pennies (nickels, dimes and quarters, too) to the For Pets’ Sake table at the Market’s Community Booth. You can even bring dollars! All donations are used to help the cats and dogs of Montezuma and Dolores counties live healthier and happier lives! Young Eagles Flight Experience



Cortez Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1451 has scheduled a Young Eagles Flight Experience for children from the ages of 8 to 17 on Saturday, July 7 at the Cortez Municipal Airport. Flights will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 10 a.m., weather conditions permitting. Flights are provided to participating children at no cost. Cortez Cultural Center celebrates 25 years



Join the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St., on Saturday, July 7 in celebration of its 25th year as the center of culture and art in our community. Cake and ice cream will be served at 4 p.m., along with a book signing, followed at 5 p.m. by a panel enjoying early memories of the Center. ‘Amazing Desert Journey’ theme



for Vacation Bible School

The Dolores United Methodist Church will hold Vacation Bible School from 9 to 11:30 a.m. daily, Monday through Friday, July 9 to 13. “Amazing Desert Journey” is the theme for this year which will be held at the Johnson Memorial UMC at 105 N. 8th St. in Dolores. Children ages 5-11 are invited to come and learn about Jesus through interesting Bible stories. Games, snacks and music will also be part of the special activities planned. Kids’ Culture Camp



at the Cortez Cultural Center

Kids’ Culture Camp returns to the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St., Mondays and Tuesdays in July starting Monday, July 9. Activities include mime, puppeteering, arts/crafts, and some outdoor activities. $100 for all four sessions prepaid, or $35 per day; scholarships are available. Habitat for Humanity site dedication



Habitat for Humanity of Montezuma County extends an invitation to county residents to join in the formal dedication of its first land purchase on Wednesday, July 11 at 9 a.m. The dedication will be short and conclude with the placement of a sign designating the lot as the site of a future Habitat for Humanity home. Acquisition of this property spanned three years of fundraising and hard work, and we hope folks will come join us in this celebration. To reach the dedication site, travel north on Hwy. 145, and turn right at T-Box Liquor on Fairway, just after the Elks Lodge. Turn again at the first intersection on your right. See you there!




Piñon Project hosts Toddler Olympics



Beginning Thursday, July 12, The Piñon Project’s Parents As Teachers program will host the Toddler Olympics, a fun 6-week series of games and activities designed to encourage a healthy family lifestyle.Each Thursday we will meet at the Parque de Vida amphitheater at 11:30 a.m., have a nutritious, delicious lunch together, and then play Olympic-themed games until 1 p.m. Lunch will be provided by The Piñon Project.This is a free activity, open to families of 2 and 3 year olds.Please RSVP to Lara at 564-1195 to reserve a spot for your little athlete.




Cortez Library July computer classes



The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in July. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Fridays, July 13 and 27, a class on the various aspects of finding a job on the Internet will be held. On Thursday, July 19, a basic Word class will be taught. All classes must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library at 565-8117 or by stopping by.




Musicians, singers invited



to take part in Gospel Music Fest

Montelores Baptist Church will host a Gospel Music Fest on Saturday, July 14 from noon to 5p.m. Everyone is invited to come for an afternoon of great Gospel Music. Various local groups and musicians will perform inside the church’s beautiful, air-conditioned facility. Refreshments will be available to purchase, including hot dogs, Navajo tacos, chips, and sodas. Montelores Baptist Church is located at 18735 Rd. 23.5 (off Hwy. 184 and across from Narriguinnep Reservoir). Hellbound Glory from Reno

On Saturday, July 14, the Hollywood Bar and Grill, 417 Central Ave., Dolores, will host Hellbound Glory from Reno, Nevada. Their flavor of scumbag country — featuring songs of love, heartbreak and destruction — are making them one of the bands in country to be reckoned with. Having played with the likes of David Allan Coe and Kid Rock, the band is going to bring a rockin’ time right here to Dolores! Show begins at 9 p.m.; tickets are $7. Navajo taco lunch at Dolores Community Center



Dolores United Methodist Church will hold a Navajo Taco Lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave. Adults are $7,children 10 years old and under eat for $3. Summer Enrichment Programs



at Medicine Horse

Medicine Horse Equine Therapy Center are holding their Summer Enrichment Programs. Kids ages 7 through 12 will learn about horses and how to take care of them, learn how to ride bareback, do art projects, make horse treats and just have fun with horses. The beginning skills camp runs from Monday through Friday, July 16-20. The advanced skills camp runs from Aug. 6-10. Both camps are from 9 a.m. to noon. Vacation Bible School

Mountain View Baptist Church of Dolores invites any child between the ages of 3 years old and 6th grade to join us for fun at the “Amazing Wonders Aviation” Vacation Bible School to encounter God’s awesome powers. The adventure begins Monday through Friday, July 16-20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Come join us as we fly to some of the world’s greatest natural wonders and encounter God’s awesome power. As we fly around the world, kids will take off from worship at The Worship Rally Hangar and make their first stop at the stunning Victoria Falls for Bible study and enjoy dinner at the Paricutin Volcano. Second class of ‘Marketing for Smarties’ business marketing series



The second and third classes of the Marketing for Smarties Series will take place at the Welcome Center in Cortez, 928 E. Main St., on Wednesday, July 18, and Wednesday, Aug. 15. Classes are from 1 to 5 p.m. This 3-part series breaks marketing down into a step-by-step process, and helps to resolve a lot of the problems many small businesses encounter when trying to effectively promote their products and services. Recommended for new and existing businesses. The cost is $149, and scholarships for attending are available.
