The Mancos Town Board approved the transfer of $18,000 from the Mancos Marshal’s savings account to the Marshal’s operating budget for 2012. The money is to purchase items that Bill Knauer, Mancos Marshal, says are essential for him and the two deputies to “do a good job as a police department.” Some of the items include raincoats, camcorders, snow tires, winter gloves, tactical gloves, hard drives and the cost of bringing two patrol cars from Indiana. “The cars are fully equipped, except for radios,” Knauer said. “We will need to paint them, too, but otherwise they are in excellent condition.”

In addition, the Town Board discussed moving the old jail to Boyle Park.

In 1972 Colorado passed a law that gave counties the right to approve or reject land divisions of fewer than 35 acres. There are several methods to gain approval, the most simple being a subdivision variance. Dolores County Commissioners seldom question requests to create a single parcel for a house or division of real estate after a landowner dies. The land dividers are warned, however, that no further division under 35 acres will be allowed for five years.

On Sept. 16, something went awry as three individuals were canyoneering in upper Oak Creek Canyon. They were lowering one member of the group into the canyon when he plunged an estimated 50 or 60 feet to the bottom, sustaining serious injuries. The Ouray Mountain Rescue Team was dispatched and sent a group of four men on foot to rescue the 39-year-old man. After learning local helicopters could not make the rescue because of the terrain, the Colorado National Guard sent a Blackhawk helicopter from the High-Altitude Army National Guard Training Site in Eagle, Colo. Night vision gear was deployed and the injured man was raised to the helicopter.
