Children’s Kiva Yard Sale fundraiser



for tuition program

The Children’s Kiva Yard Sale will take place on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Kiva, 1204 E. Main St. in Cortez. For sale will be household items, Halloween costumes, clothing and miscellaneous other items. This semi-annual sale is a fundraiser for Kiva’s tuition assistance program. Spooktacular Halloween light display happens nightly



The public is invited to view a free Spooktacular Halloween light show set to music for kids and adults alike. Enjoy the show nightly from 7 to 10:30 p.m. from now through Sunday, Nov. 4. The display is located south of Cortez at 6821 Hwy. 160/491 (next to Redburn Tire). This annual light display is done as a gift to the community.




Al Basics headlines Hip-Hop show fundraiser for Cortez Santa



Al Basics, founder of Kamerata Records, will make a Cortez pit stop on his tour and headline a show with fellow label mates Pablo S. Cobars and P.ost S.cript at Blondies, 45 E. Main St., at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Hip-Hop collective are touring to promote their most current albums which all were released this past summer. Some local artists that will perform as well are Ugliboiodditi, Ice Man, and All Day. The event is a toy drive in which all benefits will go to Cortez Santa. It will be an age 18-and-over event and admission is $10 or a brand-new toy. For more information, call Blondies at 565-4015.




M-CHS fall drama production



is a dark comedy classic

Montezuma-Cortez High School drama department will present their fall production, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” a dark comedy classic on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the M-CHS auditorium. The 2012-2013 theatre season will feature shows from the 1930s and 1940s era, keeping with the department’s theme this year, “A New Deal.” Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Mancos weekend Indoor Flea



Market begins

There will be an Indoor Flea Market in Mancos every Saturday and Sunday, beginning this Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Flea Market will be held at the Old Hardware Store, 192 S. Main, across the bridge and just past The Absolute Bakery. Everyone is welcome to come sell, browse and buy! Spaces are available — a 12-by-12 foot space is $12 for both days. Help Stomp Out Cancer Bake Sale



The VFW Ladies Auxiliary #5231 will hold a Help Stomp Out Cancer Bake Sale on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the VFW Post, 136 W. Grand in Mancos from 10:30 a.m. until the goodies run out. There will be homemade bread, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, pies and candy. Get your Halloween goodies! The proceeds from this bake sale will go towards Cancer Aid and Research in Colorado. Heart to Heart 20th Anniversary

Heart to Heart, Montezuma Crisis Pregnancy Center, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an open house on Sunday, Oct. 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. For 20 years, Heart to Heart has provided free pregnancy tests and counseling to those facing an unplanned pregnancy. The community is welcome to come see the recently updated look of the center, and to enjoy light refreshments. Breakthrough approaches for treating mental health disorders



Dr. Amy Loschert, a local naturopathic physician, will give a two-part series on how to assess and address mental health disorders from a physical perspective and will discuss the latest research on Monday, Oct. 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. at The Dolores Healing Space, 102 S. 4th St. This first segment will address depression and its related nutrient deficiencies, along with shortcomings of antidepressant therapy. For hundreds of years, Western Medicine had viewed disorders such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and addiction from a strictly psychological perspective. Manaugh Elementary Book Fair



Manaugh Elementary will hold a Book Fair from Monday through Friday, Oct. 22-26. The Book Fair will be held in the library of the school at 300 E. 4th St. in Cortez. The hours are from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday. Presentation on insurance and the construction industry



Four Corners Builders Association invites the public to a free presentation of Josh McHenry of CO-West Insurance Group of Cortez on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. Josh will talk about insurance as it pertains to the construction industry. Mesa Elementary School Scholastic Book Fair



“Every Reader is a Star!” is the theme for this year’s Scholastic Book Fair at Mesa Elementary School from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 23 and 24, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. The fair will take place in the Mesa Elementary library, 703 W. Seventh St., Cortez. Funds raised will help purchase books for Mesa’s media center and classroom libraries. Families, community members, and home school families are invited to attend this fun reading event that helps inspire children to become lifelong readers. Civil Rights Commission invites public to two area meetings

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission invites the public to two meetings on Thursday, Oct. 25 in Cortez and Towaoc for an informal discussion on civil rights issues facing Coloradans. The meetings will be held at First National Bank in Cortez, 140 W. Main St., from 1 to 3 p.m., and at the Ute Mountain Casino Conference Room, 3 Weeminuche Dr. in Towaoc, from 6 to 8 p.m. The meetings will be held to educate the public on state civil rights laws and also to take any complaints related to employment, housing, or public accommodations, such as service in a restaurant, park or other public place. Cortez Middle School holds Parent/Teach Conferences



Cortez Middle School will have Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 26, from 8 a.m. to noon. No appointment is necessary. Pleasant View author will read, sign new civil war book



Author Lowell F. Volk will be reading and signing copies of his new book, “Trevor Lane and the Civil War,” on Thursday, Oct. 25 at Spruce Tree Coffee House from 5 to 7 p.m. Volk is a retired software engineer and resides in Pleasant View. This is his third book in a series of five. “Trevor Lane and the Civil War” is about a young man from Pittsburgh, Penn., whose family has been killed. To keep him out of trouble, he is entered into the Army and joins the Pennsylvania Sixth Cavalry. Follow Trevor as he learns from the depths of war, escapes prison death and finds new friends and new beginnings. ‘Sun Come Up’ screens at Conscious Movie Night



Conscious Movie Night will screen the film, “Sun Come Up” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31 (in Dolores turn left on 11th, go 1.8 miles, and look for the large sign with the dove on the left). How is climate change affecting the world? Follow some of the world’s first environmental refugees, the Carteret Islanders, as they leave their remote island chain in the South Pacific Ocean in search of livable land. Finding a war-torn Bougainville 50 miles across the open ocean, continuing their way of life becomes challenging. The movie is free, but if you would like to make a donation, we will send it to an organization that’s truly helping the world. For Pets’ Sake Halloween Bake Sale to benefit local pets



For Pets’ Sake Humane Society will hold a Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the north entrance to City Market in Cortez. As usual, there will be lots of cookies, cakes, pies, breads, and homemade dog treats! Proceeds from the fundraiser will aid the population of Montezuma and Dolores counties. In addition to running a spay/neuter assistance programs, For Pets’ Sake provides foster homes for animals awaiting adoption and helps local people pay for emergency veterinary care for their pets. Donations of baked goods from the group’s members and supporters can be dropped off at City Market starting at 8:30 a.m. the morning of the sale. Baked goods can also be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Let It Grow Nursery on Mildred across from the Colorado Welcome Center. Lewis-Arriola Halloween Carnival, Spaghetti Supper



Lewis-Arriola School, 21434 County Rd. U, will have their annual Halloween Carnival and Spaghetti Supper on Saturday, Oct. 27. Supper will be from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and the Carnival will begin at 7 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Carnival tickets are five for $1. Come and enjoy a fun evening with games, chicken bingo, haunted house, cake walk and more. There will be a silent auction and door prizes will be given out throughout the evening. Cortez Elks Lodge Halloween Carnival



The Cortez Elks Lodge will hold their annual Halloween Carnival from 4 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Lodge, 2100 N. Dolores Rd. There will be games and prizes for the best-dressed costume for all ages, and a pinata contest. Chili and cornbread or chili dogs will be available for $3. Game tickets are .25 cents. Fantastic Fall Festival



Blessed Bible Church, 23826 Road G, is having a Fantastic Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. A great alternative to Halloween, all children preschool through the sixth grade are invited. Dolores Rotary Club Bingo Night



The Dolores Rotary Club will kick-off their annual bingo season with a bingo night on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave. A light supper and dessert will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. for $5, with bingo following at 7 p.m. Cards are $1 per game or $10 for the evening. Master Teacher Seminars with Father Peter Bowes



The Center of Light at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 CR 31 (in Dolores, turn left at 11th, go 1.8 miles, and turn left into a driveway with a large sign with a dove), will offer three seminars with Father Peter Bowes. “Love, Universally Felt...Universally Misunderstood,” will be on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Join us in a discussion of the nature of true love. Discover how our society has misrepresented this highest of human connections. On Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., “The Hunter’s Heart: Male Emotion & the Spiritual Path” will be discussed. This is a seminar about the transformation of men, designed to help you explore and express the masculine dynamic of your spirituality. Women are also welcome to attend. There is a suggested donation is $25 for each of the previous two seminars; bring a friend for free. “You Are Loved” is the Saturday, Nov. 3 seminar, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. How do you know you are loved? Presbyterian Women Fall/Christmas Bazaar



The Presbyterian Women will hold their Fall/Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 350 S. Washington St. in Cortez. Pie and drinks will be served all day for $1.50 and lunch of your choice of soups, bread, pie and a drink will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $5 for adults, and $3 for children age 10 and under. There will be breads, pies, cakes, candy, cookies, jams, jellies, pickles, salsa, crafts, plants, gift items and more. Vista Grande nursing home holds beaded jewelry bazaar



Vista Grande nursing home is holding their first ever beaded jewelry bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the nursing home lobby. The bazaar was started by staff and aids who helped Vista Grande residents design and make pieces of jewelry and other accessories. There will be earrings, necklaces, bracelets and decorated flip flops for sale. All the proceeds will be donated to benefit Parkinson’s disease. VFW Ladies Auxiliary holds post-vote chili & pie dinner

12-week Anger Management Class



The Recovery Center (formerly Cortez Addictions Recovery Services), 35 N. Ash St., is offering a 12-week Anger Management class starting on Thursday, Nov. 8. Pancake Supper fundraiser and trip raffle



Hospice of Montezuma invites the community to a pancake supper and raffle drawing for a trip of a lifetime on Friday, Nov. 9 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Montezuma County Annex, 103 N. Chestnut in Cortez. Tickets for the supper and the raffle will be available from Hospice employees, at the Hospice office or sold at the door. The pancake supper will include all-you-can-eat pancakes, bacon, eggs, dessert toppings and beverages, and is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children and $15 for families. The raffle drawing will be held at 6:30 p.m. for a voucher from Cortez Travel in the amount of $4,000 to be used towards a trip of your dreams. Tickets for the raffle are $25 each and are available from board members, employees, at the office and at the door during the pancake supper. Come join us for a great meal and an exciting raffle. 28th Annual Holiday Craft Fair

Author at Cultrual Center



The Cortez Cultural Center will host, J. W. Keleher, a writer, educator, and archaeologist, who will have a presentation on Nov. 16 “Chasing Mermaids: The Process of writing a Novel.” The presentation/workshop will be held from 5-6 p.m. and will follow the process Keleher went through in writing Beul Nam Beinn.

Domestic & Sexual Violence Community Education Series



Renew will begin the Fall/Winter Domestic and Sexual Violence Community Education Series on Monday, Nov. 12. All seminars will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Four Corners Child Advocacy Center, 140 N. Linden, and will run through Wednesday, Dec. 19.
