Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5231 and Ladies Auxiliary of Mancos was the recipient of the VFW Outstanding Community Service Post Award at the organization's annual convention in Louisville, Ky., on July 22, during an invitation-only reception.
Criteria to receive the award are set by the VFW State Headquarters for recognizing posts' community service work in their local areas.
This year, 68 VFW posts from across the nation received the national award.
Each post receives a reflective street sign to display in their city recognizing this award. These posts are outstanding examples of the more than 11.9 million hours of community service valued at more than $263 million performed by VFW volunteers last year
While honoring the award recipients, VFW Commander-in-Chief John E. Hamilton said, "Through our community service program, we help build a better, stronger America, and we fulfill our commitment to serve America's veterans and their families. This post has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to their community. Their exemplary service is an example to citizens across this great nation."
In addition to community service efforts, the VFW assists veterans and their families to obtain veterans' entitlements and other services for the wellbeing of those serving on active duty, in the National Guard and the Reserves.
The VFW was founded in 1899. There are more than 2 million members of the VFW and its auxiliaries in approximately 7,300 posts worldwide.
