After just one quarter of play against Sangre de Cristo on Oct. 4, the Mancos High School football team found itself leading 30-0. By halftime, the Bluejays had stretched that lead to 44-0, and throughout the second half, the game’s final result was never in doubt.
Such has been the pattern for Mancos this season as the team has amassed a glowing 5-0 record and risen to No. 3 in the state chasaanow.com Colorado eight-man poll.
Among the standout performers during the Bluejays win over Sangre de Cristo was sophomore running back Chase Moore, who carried the ball 10 times for 214 yards and four touchdowns. Moore also returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
Also turning heads was junior Christian Cova, who carried the ball five times for 51 yards and one touchdown. Senior quarterback Breccen Morreli ran the ball five times for 43 yards and one touchdown and was credited with two sacks.
Sophomore James Wagener made three catches for 42 yards and a touchdown, and backup quarterback Ayden Matthews completed a 12-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Although the Mancos offense stole the show throughout much of the contest, the team’s defense was once again strong thanks in large part to junior linebacker Colt Fury, who was credited with a game-high 16 tackles. Fury also had one sack, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble.
Hoping to keep their undefeated record intact, the Bluejays will return home at 6 p.m. Friday to face Sanford High School, which has a 5-0 record overall. Sanford is ranked No. 8 in the www.chsaaanow.com eight-man football poll.
