Head-on crash on U.S. 550 kills 2

A second head-on collision occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 24, along U.S. Highway 550, killing 44-year-old Julie Ann Crow of Durango, as well as an unnamed Cortez resident.
Capt. Adrian Driscoll of the Colorado State Patrol said the accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. when a driver in a Jeep Commander, which was travelling southbound, crossed the yellow line and struck a Dodge Charger traveling in the opposite direction. The accident occurred just north of the Aspen Rose RV Park near mile-post 27.
After the accident, Highway 550 was closed in both directions for about two hours. At approximately 5 p.m., a single southbound lane was reopened and by 5:30 p.m., all lanes were reopened to traffic.
Although an exact cause of the crash has yet to be determined, alcohol use and drug use are being looked into as possible contributing factors.
