DENVER – A federal jury found a Towaoc resident guilty Thursday, Oct. 3, of failing to register as a sex offender.
Glen Earl Cotonuts was convicted in 1993 of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and sentenced to 188 months in prison.
He was released from prison in August 2007, about a year after Congress passed the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. Prosecutors secured an indicted against him in the summer of 2012 for failing to register.
The trial began Monday and concluded Wednesday, Oct. 2, and jurors deliberated for about a day before returning the verdict late Thursday afternoon.
Sentencing is set for Dec. 16 in front of U.S. District Judge Christine Arguello in Denver.
Cotonuts was prosecuted in federal court because he is a member of the Northern Ute Indian tribe and lived on the Ute Muntain Ute reservation.
