Prevention tips

How to keep from accidentally starting a wildfire that destroys habitat, private property, and puts the lives of firefighters and fellow community members at risk.
Open burning
Always call dispatch at 565-8441 before starting a burn.
Follow any burn restrictions including fire bans.
Check the weather forecast.
Choose a safe burning site 50’ from anything you wouldn’t want to burn.
Prepare the burn site.
Keep it a manageable size. Begin with small fires.
Never leave your fire unattended.
Smokey says: “If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave!”
Call 911 immediately if the fire escapes your control.
Campfires
Follow the same rules for open burning with these exceptions and additions:
Use an existing fire pit when available.
You don’t need to call dispatch unless you plan to put up a lot of smoke.
Assuming a small campfire, 15’ fire pit clearance from tents, brush, and other combustibles should be sufficient.
Equipment maintenance
Make sure your outdoor tools and toys are equipped with spark arrestors.
Carry a shovel and/or fire extinguisher.
Smoking
Get in the habit of properly disposing of cigarette butts. Remind your friends.
Report unattended fires and suspicious fire activity immediately by calling 911.
