Cortez Library announces February Storytime themes
Baby, Its Cold Outside! is the February theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St. Storytime is held every Thursday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Both days will follow the same theme. On Thursday there will be no craft. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays.
Presidents Day will be the focal point on Thursday, Feb. 16 and Friday, Feb. 17. Storytime will wrap up the month with 100th Day of School on Thursday, Feb. 23 and Friday, Feb. 24. Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Doggie Day Spa fundraiser will pamper pooch and people
Show your dog some love this Valentines Day, and come have your pooch pampered at the Cortez Animal Shelters Doggie Day Spa fundraiser. The shelter will be open this Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the event. The shelter is located at 2791 E. Main St.
For a donation, your hound can have a bath, a brush, nail trim, and ear cleaning while the lucky owner gets their very own 20-minute table massage. Reservation required. Its a great deal, a great time, and a chance to help raise funds for the homeless pets at the shelter.

Boy Scout troops to hold food drive
Boy Scout troops No. 522 of Cortez and No. 518 of Mancos are currently collecting non-perishable food donations for the community. Bags were distributed in the south section of Cortez/south of Main Street. Bags for both troops will be picked up on Saturday, Feb. 11. Old fashioned Valentine card-making workshop
The Mancos Public Library, located at 211 W. First St., will offer an Old Fashioned Valentine Card Making Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon. All materials will be supplied including paper, glue, glitter, doilies, markers and paints. Free! All ages welcome.

Four Corners Band to play

Hoof Beats 4-H Club sponsors Valentines Day Ball
The Hoof Beats 4-H Club will sponsor a Valentines Day Ball, with music by DJ P.A. Jackson, from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center, 21176 Road S.
Besides dancing, refreshments and snacks will be offered. Admission is $5 per person, or $8 per couple, pay at the door. Proceeds raised will help members of the Hoof Beats 4-H Club attend a horse clinic.

Free education series on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
Renew will offer a free community education series about Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, to begin Monday, Feb. 13. This group will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for four weeks. For those who want to be a volunteer advocate, the training will continue on the same schedule for two additional weeks.
You will learn why these two crimes are the only ones that the victim is regularly blamed for. You will learn how the community can and does help. You will learn what Renew does, who Renew is and why we are needed in our community. You are invited to bring a brown bag meal for yourself. Beverages and small snacks will be provided. Space is limited to 25 people.

San Juan Basin Extension Beef Cattle Symposium
The 29th Annual San Juan Basin Extension Beef Cattle Symposium will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 Hwy. 160, Cortez.
The 2012 Beef Cattle Symposium will primarily focus on profitability, animal health, and management. Registration is $20 per person if postmarked by Friday, Feb. 10, and will include lunch and workshop materials. Free screening of More Than a Month documentary
The Mancos Public Library, located at 211 W. First St., will show the film More Than A Month on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.
Shukree Hassan Tilghman, a 29-year-old African-American filmmaker, sets out on a cross-country campaign to end Black History Month. He stops in various cities, wearing a sandwich board, to solicit signatures on his petition to end the observance. He explains that relegating Black History Month to the coldest, shortest month of the year is an insult, and that black history is not separate from American history. Through this thoughtful and humorous journey, he explores what the treatment of history tells us about race and equality in a post-racial America. Free! Panel-led discussion to follow the film.

Soups of the World event will benefit Bridge Shelter
The 5th Annual Soups of the World will be presented from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 at Mary Blake Hall (Graces Kitchen) at 110 West North St. This event is sponsored by St. Barnabas Church and Graces Kitchen to benefit the Bridge Emergency Shelter.
Dinner will feature your choice of two soups from various regions of the world. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids under twelve. Valentines Gala luncheon includes fashion show, entertainment

SJMAs Winter Discovery Walk at Hawkins Preserve
San Juan Mountains Association offers Winter Discovery Programs throughout the winter. Join us for SJMAs Winter Discovery Walk at Hawkins Preserve on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Hawkins Preserve is located at the south end of Cedar St. off 7th Avenue. Cedar dead ends in the Preserves parking lot.
If there is snow, well use snowshoes to explore the wintry world. If there isnt, well still have fun looking at what plants and animals are doing to survive in the winter.

Parenting classes at Pinon Project
The Pinon Project will offer two 14-week Incredible Years parenting classes from 5:30 to 8 p.m. One class will be held on Tuesdays, beginning Feb. 21, at The Pinon Project, 300 N. Elm St., Cortez; and one class on Thursdays, to begin on Feb. 16 at the Ute Mountain Child Development Center in Towaoc, at 514 Sunset Blvd.

Relay for Life Mardi Gras Kick-off event in Cortez
This years Relay For Life committee would like to invite interested community members, returning RFL teams, and new teams to join in the fun, food, and information sharing at this years Relay For Life Mardi Gras Kick-Off event at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the Trinity Lutheran Church Hall, 208 North Dolores Road, Cortez.

Horse club sets cutting practice
The Four Corners Cutting Horse Club will sponsor a cutting practice at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The club is seeking new members and spectators are welcome.
Non club members are welcome to compete. The cost is $65 for two goes. A potluck lunch will be served.
