Dolores Rotary Club Bingo Night
The Dolores Rotary Club will sponsor a bingo night Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside Ave. Soup, corn bread and dessert will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. for $5 with bingo following at 7 p.m.
Cards are $1 per game or $10 for the evening. All proceeds will benefit the Dolores Senior Citizens Group.

Builders Association offers presentation on new roofs, repairs
Four Corners Builders Association invites the public to a free presentation and question time on the topic of roofs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the side room at Benys restaurant, 640 S. Broadway, Cortez.
Steve Wilderson will be there to help give some insight on how to be well-prepared when it is time to deal with putting on a roof, or repairs to be concerned with. Admission is free.

March Storytime theme at Cortez Public Library
In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb is the March theme of Storytime at the Cortez Public Library, located at 202 N. Park Street. Storytime is held every Thursday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Both days will follow the same theme. On Thursday there will be no craft. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. on Fridays.
Cuddle Up is the subject on Thursday, March 1 and Friday, March 2. Hats will be discussed on Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9. St. Patricks Day will be presented on Thursday, March 15 and Friday, March 16. Just Ducky will be the focal point of Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23. Storytime will wrap up the month with Pizza Party! on Thursday, March 29 and Friday, March 30.
Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.

Montezuma Land Conservancy hosts free landowner lunch
Montezuma Land Conservancy invites you to eat lunch with your neighbors and hear about how MLC has helped landowners keep working lands working and improve their finances on Thursday, March 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Dolores, 400 Railroad Ave.
Could a conservation easement help you do the same? This will be a chance to hear from local landowners about their experiences with conservation easements.

Pinon Project will offer free basic budgeting class
The Pinon Project of Cortez will offer a free five-week, ten-hour Thursday evening workshop called Making Money Work For You that begins on Thursday, March 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Pinon Project offices, 300 N. Elm, Cortez. A meal is provided at 5:30 p.m.
The workshop is open to TANF eligible families who live in Montezuma County. This basic budgeting program is designed for people who are concerned about their money, whether just starting out or struggling to make it paycheck to paycheck, looking for ways to manage their debt or starting a savings plan. The workshop covers goal setting, credit and debt, various types of insurance, stretching personal resources, spending choices and creating a spending and savings plan. Participants who successfully complete all five sessions will receive a $50 gift card. There is no cost to interested individuals for this course. Licensed child care and meals will be provided free each night of the class for participants and children who are pre-registered.

Extension offers fruit tree pruning workshop
With proper training and correct pruning techniques, a fruit tree will maintain its overall health for years. A fruit tree pruning workshop will be held on Thursday, March 1 from at 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southwest Colorado Research station, approximately 17 miles north on Hwy. 491 and west 1/4 mile on Road Z.
The cost is $15 per person, payable the day of the workshop. Attendees must bring their own chair, water, snacks, lunch and dress in warm clothing. If instruction is wanted on hands-on pruning, bring loppers or hand pruners. Extension staff will demonstrate pruning apple, pear, peach and plum trees in the orchard. Please leave pets at home.

Cortez Library offers March computer classes
The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will offer a series of computer training classes in March. All classes start at 1 p.m. On Thursday, March 1, Randy Funk will teach Basic Internet Searching. Learn about the World Wide Web, URLs, Links, Web Browsers, Toolbars on Web Browsers, Address Bar, and Simple Searching Tips and Techniques. On Friday, March 9 and 23, Gabe Torres from the Southwest Colorado Workforce Center will teach computer classes on various aspects of finding a job on the Internet, including: registering with the Workforce Center; updating your Workforce registration; conducting job searches statewide; updating skills which will allow the system to find more jobs for the client; applying for unemployment insurance; ONET-ON-Line website job title searches; resume preparation; searching for State applications; labor market information; labor law information; and facilitating the WorkKeys Skills Assessment. On Thursday, March 15, Randy Funk will instruct on Google where attendees can learn simple searching tips and techniques, Google Maps, and Google Images. On Thursday, March 29 she will teach Email with Gmail on getting and using a Gmail account.

Buddhism Trilogy Seminar weekend
The Center of Light in Dolores presents a Seminar Weekend: a Buddhism Trilogy with Mother Clare Watts. The first will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 at 30705 Road V.6 in Dolores. The second is at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 2 at the Durango Dharma Center, 2530 Colorado Ave. The third part will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (lunch is included) on Saturday, March 3 at the Dolores location.
The evening sessions have a requested donation of $25 and the daytime session is a $40 requested donation (bring a friend to any for free).

Experts will present Soil Health Workshop
The Dolores Conservation District and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will sponsor The Soil Health (Wealth) Workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (registration at 8:30 a.m.) on Saturday, March 3 at the Lewis-Arriola Community Center at 21615 Road S. There will be a $10 charge per family or farm with lunch provided (please pre-register).
Sponsors will put tools in the hands of farmers to help them improve soil health and increase profitability. Speakers include: Mike Collins, NRCS Soil Scientist What makes a soil healthy?; Dick Sparks, NRCS Agronomist Why does it matter?; Ron Godin, CSU Agronomist PhD How do I create and maintain a healthy soil? and Brendon Rockey, local ag producer How does it affect the bottom line? Webster presents on Basketmaker, Pueblo-period artifacts
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society is pleased to present Dr. Laurie Webster to discuss New Research with the Earliest Perishable Collections: The Green and Lang Collections at the Field Museum on Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St.
During the 1890s, local collectors excavated literally thousands of Basketmaker and Pueblo-period artifacts from rock shelters and cliff houses in southeastern Utah. Despite the importance and rarity of these collections, only a handful of these artifacts have been studied or published. In her presentation, she will highlight some of the more remarkable perishable artifacts encountered during the project and present new insights gleaned from the study of these early collections.
Laurie Webster is an anthropologist and specialist in Southwestern perishable material culture. She is a visiting scholar in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Arizona and a Research Associate at both the American Museum of Natural History and the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center.

Czech film will screen at Independent Film Series
The Cortez Public Library, 202 N. Park St., will screen the Czech film, Protektor at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 as part of their Independent Film Series.
The film is directed by Marek Najbrt, and its summary states, 1938, Prague. Emil, a radio reporter, is married to the beautiful Hana, an actress whose film has catapulted her into fame. As the Nazis come to power, however, Hanas Jewish heritage precipitates her fall from stardom to the bottom of the social ladder. In order to protect her, Emil compromises himself collaborating with the new Nazi-controlled state radio station. But as Emil starts enjoying the attention and respect that had previously evaded him, his fidelity and loyalty towards his wife begin to falter. The assassination of the Third Reich Deputy Protector and a chance encounter on a bicycle bring their lingering marriage to a crisis, possibly sealing Hanas fate. This film won Best Film at the Denver Film Festival.

AARP driver safety course offered to older motorists
AARP will sponsor a driver safety course Wednesday, March 7 from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room in the Empire Electric Building, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez.
This four-hour course is authorized by the state of Colorado. It is designed to meet the needs of older drivers. The course will review safe driving techniques as well as Colorado traffic laws. Completion of this course can qualify you for a discount on your automobile insurance. The course is available to all motorists whether or not they are members of AARP. There is a $12 fee for AARP members and a $14 fee for nonmembers, to be paid by check (no cash), which covers materials. Slim McWilliams will perform cowboy songs, poems
Cowboy singer and poet Slim McWilliams will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, at the Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church, 350 S. Washington, Cortez.
McWilliams always wanted to be a cowboy, first hiring out at age 14. He worked as a cowboy, guide, packer, and rode rough-string on ranches from Wyoming to Arizona. Now retired from banking, he is living his dream life as a cowboy singer and poet. Slim has a number of CDs out with songs new, old, original and spiritual, all sung in his distinctive bass voice. The performance is free and the public is invited to stay for dessert afterward.
