Art, horse statuary on display at the library in November
The displays at the Cortez Public Library are horse statuary, owned by Ann Streett-Joslin and acrylics by Justin Dodson. They will be up through the end of December. The Southwest Artists League is also displaying their work. The featured artist for November is Betty Grip.
Do You Feel the Chill? is theme for Storytime
Do You Feel the Chill? is the November theme of Raising Readers Storytime at the Cortez Public Library. Storytime is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for preschool-aged children. Older children are welcome to join in for the craft at 11:15 a.m. Pumpkins and Apples will be discussed on Thursday, Nov. 8. Turkey Day will be presented on Thursday, Nov. 15. The library will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 22 in observance of Thanksgiving. Advent Calendar will wrap up the month on Thursday, Nov. 29.
Raising Readers Storytime offers songs, stories, crafts and silliness and uses the Early Childhood Literacy Initiative program.
Computer training classes
The Cortez Public Library, and the Unlimited Learning Center at 640 E. Second St., will offer computer classes in November. On Thursday, Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Basic Computer Class at the Unlimited Learning Center. At 1 p.m. there will be a class on Internet Shopping at the library. On Thursday, Nov. 29 at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Basic Computer Class at the Unlimited Learning Center. At 1 p.m. at the library there will be a class called Incredibly Basic Computer Skills. All classes at the library must be signed up for ahead of time, as space is limited. Sign up by calling the library or by stopping by. Little People Storytime
The Mancos Public Library offers Little People Storytime on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. in both English and Spanish. Children ages 3-6 will be taught songs, verses and stories in both languages with the changing of the seasons emphasized. A craft is also offered.
After-school movies on Mondays
The Mancos Public Library will offer free movie screenings for children age 8 years and up each Monday in November at 4 p.m. On Monday, Nov. 12, the library will show two episodes of The Last Airbender. On Monday, Nov. 19, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian will screen. On Monday, Nov. 26, The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader will be shown.
Fort Lewis Professor will give talk on Tolkiens The Hobbit
Fort Lewis History professor Michael Martin will give a free talk at the Mancos Public Library on J.R.R. Tolkiens masterpiece, The Hobbit on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mancos Public Library. The talk is entitled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Exploration. This book is a rich and exciting tale about a Hobbits journey where he meets and sometimes thieves from and sometimes battles with trolls, dwarves, elves, men, dragons, wargs, and wizards. This talk will examine and explore several of those aspects to J.R.R. Tolkiens The Hobbit, as well as the actual written text published first in 1937, the upcoming 2012 movie, as well as what were the many and various inspirations for Tolkiens story. Oh, and another charming tale of his might come up for discussion: The Lord of the Rings.
SW Colorado Fire Season: A Year in Review FireWise presentation
2012 Southwest Colorado Fire Season: A Year in Review, will be presented at the Mancos Public Library on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 6:30p.m. Please join FireWise in reviewing the situation and lessons learned from this fire season as presented by Scott McDermid, West Zone Fire Management Officer for San Juan Public Lands, and other fire personnel. Community Cinema will screen Solar Mommas
Solar Mommas will screen as part of Mancos Public Librarys Community Cinema on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The film, produced by Mette Heide, documents the amazing story of the Barefoot College, where women from all over the world, many of whom have never had any formal education, are trained to become solar engineers so that they can bring electricity back to their homes. The film is one of the first honored by the Hilton Worldwide LightStay Sustainability Award, an award created by Hilton Worldwide and Sundance Institute to acknowledge documentaries that showcase the connections between sustainability, economic growth and community development. A panel discussion will follow the film.
Dr. Loschert Fireside Chat on Naturopathic medicine
A Fireside Chat with Dr. Amy Loschert is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1:30 p.m. at the Mancos Public Library. She will discussUncovering the Myths and Facts About Naturopathic Medicine, A New Model of Care. Many people are justifiably frustrated with the care they have received within the conventional Western medical model.Feeling that one is heard, validated, and then cared for throughout their treatment is lost in this model most of the time. Loschertwill discuss the whole-person philosophy and history of naturopathic medicine as well as the training an ND undergoes compared to an MD and other practitioners such as herbalists, homeopaths and unlicensed naturopaths. Case studies from patients with menopause, colitis, anxiety and eczema will be used to illustrate what one can expect when seeing a naturopathic doctor.Dr. Loschert opened her River of Health Family Care practice this year in Dolores after practicing for the past eight years in Phoenix, Ariz., with a focusing on womens health.
Quilt Auction & Fall Open House
The Mancos Public Library will host a Quilt Auction & Fall Open House on Sunday, Nov. 18 from 2 to 6 p.m. Join us for live music courtesy of Jamie Bechtel & Dan Fitzpatrick, treats, buggy rides courtesy of Will Stone, kids activities, campfire with storytelling, and a cider press (bring your own apples and containers). Quilts will be hung in the library and bid sheets made available starting Nov. 1. The silent auction will end at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. There is a $5 suggested donation for this event.
