The grim reaper claimed the lives of five Montezuma County citizens within the past week. Influenza was the chief cause.
Wm. F. Veach, 86, died at Cortez. Myrtle May Milan, 26, died of influenza. Cora Stella Nelson, 60, of Mancos died. Lynn Hymphreys, 5, son of Frank Humphreys who lives west of Arriola, died of influenza.

According to an announcement in the Mancos Times-Tribune, that paper this week passes into the hands of J. C. Sutphen, recently of Chicago. I. S. Freeman has been owner of the plant for more than 20 years, but of late the paper has been under the management of J. E. Brown.

Dr. H. C. Lefurgey and G. D. Taylor are attending to business matters in Denver this week. They drove to Durango and there were joined by other bankers of the county and all took an airplane for the capitol. It is reported they made the trip from Durango to Denver in two hours and fourty-five minutes.

The Montezuma and Dolores Counties Chamber of Commerce held its regular monthly meeting at the Dill Cafe Monday with an attendance of about 20.

An auto, carrying six people, returning from a dance at Ignacio early Friday morning, overturned on the grade curve on the Florida river a half mile north of the Wm. Tyner Ranch, and Fred Titus and Mrs. Vivian McCormick met almost instant death. Mrs. McCormick, who is the mother of Hugh McCormick (son-in-law of R. C. Tucker of this place), received a crushed skull and died instantly. Fred Titus, the trap drummer who has played for several dances in Dolores this year, had his life crushed out by the weight of the car.

On Monday, a Norwood garage man phoned Bozman-Owens Motor company of their need of a part for a truck, and upon learning the part could be obtained here said they would send an airplane after it. Within a couple of hours a plane passed over and landed at the Cortez landing field and received the part, returning at once to Norwood. The distance from here to Norwood is about sixty miles and the round trip was probably accomplished in a little over an hour.

Rev. C. L. Flanders, pastor of the local Baptist church, has announced that he will retire on Jan. 1. He will continue to make Dolores his home and will take the pulpit on emergencies, he says. Rev. Flanders has served this community for many years and has many friends.

Mrs. Paul A. Shields has been quite ill with the flu this week. Mr. Shields and Dorothy both had their siege of it too.

T. M. Grant went down to Gallup last week and met his wife who came in from Denver and will now reside in Dolores.

Newell Musgrave and his mother, Mrs. Emma Musgrave, made a trip to Durango Wendesday, returning home that evening.

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Lynton, Sr. and Mrs. Lena Wilber and family were guests of the Ed Boehms last Sunday at a delicious turkey dinner.

John Ritter returned home last Friday from Grand Junction where he has been for the past several months attending business college.

Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Buchta moved this week from the old Dunlap place to one of the tenant houses belonging to Mrs. Maria Giorgetta in Dolores.
