The Bureau of Land Management’s archaeology center recently changed its name to Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum. On Aug. 27, the museum will celebrate its 30-year anniversary with special events, museum tours and refreshments.
Ernest M. Vallo Sr. of Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico, sings his original song “Canyons of the Ancients” during a 2010 ceremony at the archaeology museum.

The Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Former and current staff, volunteers and the public are invited to enjoy special tours, ranger programs, demonstrations and refreshments.

The event is free, and museum admission costs will be waived for the day.

The event is dedicated to all the people who have been affiliated with the museum (formerly the Anasazi Heritage Center) over three decades, said Marietta Eaton, manager of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

“If you have been connected with us in the past, this is your invitation to join us and honor the foundational work of all who have served to create the experiences the public now enjoys,” she said.

For more information call 970-882-5600. The museum is at 27901 Colorado Highway 184 west of Dolores.
