I wish to announce that, as far as the Hazens are concerned, our winter here in Rico began in earnest on Sunday, Dec. 9, with a cold, cold chilling breeze and one inch of snow. Our three-day weekend storm brought us something like 15 inches of fairly moist snow, which was good. We heard a rumor that the San Juans might possibly receive 30 inches in the approaching front. We may not be from Missouri, The Show Me State, but we will have to see it to believe it! I guess that the "show me" statement is more of a mountain folk attitude!
The fire department held their annual Christmas potluck last Saturday night. Of course, Santa was invited to stop by, which he did. The potluck table sported a special dish this year. Alex Steele's lovely bride, Lena, prepared a wonderfully delicious Ukrainian red cabbage salad. Everybody appreciates those who take a little more time to do their part. Santa did as he promised and arrived right on time. This is always such an exciting time for everyone. After the dinner was over, the members brought in the fire trucks and all, and then something happened. The equipment was covered with heavy snow and after fitting the equipment back inside the firehouse, somebody threw a snowball and by the time the battle was over, there was snow from one end to the other, and everyone was laughing and exhausted. I'll bet they were all even more exhausted after mopping up the next day!
The Rico Women's Club held their annual Christmas dinner at Herk's restaurant. Members and guests were treated to a beautiful hors' d oeuvre created just for our party. Member Jen Stark was able to make the time to come join our celebration and she made our White Elephant exchange great fun.
Now, for the next two or three months the Club will take a vacation before preparing to make the year 2013 the best ever.
