Mancos harriers close out regular season on a high note

Closing out their regular seasons at the Eric Wolff Invitational in Monte Vista on Oct. 12, the Mancos High School girls and boys cross-country teams turned in solid performances against tough competition.

On the girls side, Mancos was led by Grace Manning, who followed up her meet win in Cortez two weeks ago with a ninth-place finish (22:23.58). About four minutes behind Manning was teammate Hakalya Snow, who placed 42nd overall (26:17.29).

Other finishers for the Mancos girls team included Aspen Bumgarner, who placed 46th (26:57.89); Zoey Steel, who placed 48th (27:06.67); and Kaysi Thomas, who crossed the line in 50th place (27:39.67).

Kylie Guiles rounded out the Lady Jays finishers with a time of 28:01.06, which was good enough for 55th place. Mancos placed fourth out of five qualifying teams at the competitive meet, which was won by Pagosa Springs High School.

On the boys side, Mancos was led by Edgar Hernandez, who placed 20th with a time of 19:24.79. John Lund finished 31st with a time of 20:15.66, and Stephen Knezek finished 34th with a time of 20:16.74.

Rounding out the Bluejays finishers were James Ayers, who placed 39th; and William Small, who crossed the line in 82nd place (28:32.79). Mancos finished seventh out of the eight total teams that qualified for the team standings. Gunnison High School won the meet.

Next up for both Mancos teams will be the Class 2A Region 4 Championship, which will take place in Delta on Oct. 19.
