Rosa Sabido, who has been in sanctuary at the Mancos Methodist Church for 500 days, plans to host a Dia de Muertos celebration at the church on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m.

The Day of the Dead holiday is a celebration and a honoring of the dead and their next chapter of their existence, Joanie Trussel said in a news release.

“Its origin in Mexico, is a joyful and colorful event demonstrating the love and respect one has for deceased family members,” she added.

Participants may bring an item such as a photograph or a food item that honors a loved one who has died, for placement on an altar that is meant to welcome back spirits to the realm of the living.

“Also, we invite people to bring a homemade headstone to place on the church grounds in a temporary ‘cemetery’ for this event,” Trussel said.

Dia de Muertos costumes are encouraged, and face painting will be available. A potluck meal and candlelight vigil on the grounds of the church also are planned.
