The water workshop at the Mancos Community Center, hosted by the Mancos Conservation District, attracted around 75 people. Gary Kennedy, superintendent of the Mancos Water Conservancy District, started the day off with a talk about the organization. The MWCD had a study conducted a few years ago, to see how much storage the reservoir would increase by raising the level of the dam.

"They found out that by adding five feet to the dam, or 1,000 acre feet to the reservoir, it would cost $4 to $5 million," Kennedy said.

DJ Simmons is planning to sink an oil well on Squaw Point and another on Bug Point this coming summer. Representatives Craig Starkey and Chris Lopez brought an application to the Dolores County Planning Commission Monday evening and cleared the first hurdle. Planners spent 90 minutes going over the applications and eventually accepted them as complete and set a public hearing March 11. A pipeline will be constructed for natural gas. Lopez said the main goal will be oil, but the company expects some natural gas production. The wells will be about 6,350 feet deep.

There were no injuries. Fire and smoke did cause damage to the house. Kunz said it took about four hours to put out. The house belonged to a member of the fire department and Kunz expressed that "the thoughts and prayers of the department are with the family."

Blanding resident Ed Johnston approached the Blanding City Council on Jan. 22 to seek support for an "Open Carry" day for firearms in Blanding. Johnston said the main purpose is to "get people to exercise their constitutional rights to carry in the open." Supporters of the event want residents to know it is happening so they won't be concerned to see a large group of people carrying weapons.

Councilman Kelly Laws said, "Let's quit worrying about being politically correct. I applaud you for doing what you are doing. We are getting beat up on every side about the Second Amendment. It is our Constitutional right."
