Members of the American Legion were on hand to give Zane Willburn his award. They are, from left, Rick Gregory, Don Swank, Kenny Williams, Willburn, Ken Hoyle and John Shriner.

Zane Willburn was awarded a certificate from the American Legion Boy's State after having completed a week-long course at the Colorado State University Pueblo campus. "The kids are selected on the basis of academic performance, life goals, sports participation and community activities," John Shriner said.

Willburn said that he learned about how a government works while he was there. "It was really cool," he said. "It was nice to be with like-minded kids who are also interested in the military. I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot."

Willburn earned three hours college credit for his work.

The American Legion is accepting applications until May 1 for the next session and applications can either be found online, or submitted to the Cortez American Legion post.
