Montezuma County and Colorado State University Extension recently hired Lucia Bueno-Valdez as a peer educator for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed).

Bueno-Valdez recently received extensive training at Colorado State University and will be responsible for conducting community classes in nutrition, food safety, stretching food dollars and the importance of physical activity in Montezuma County.

"I think SNAP-Ed classes will be so beneficial to our community," said Bueno-Valdez. "Some of what we teach will be how to plan, shop and save on meals, the benefits of eating more fruits and vegetables, and how exercise can be fun and easy."

SNAP-Ed classes are free to those who qualify. Throughout the lessons, participants will receive food thermometers, water bottles, measuring cups and spoons, grocery lists, and a cookbook filled with low-cost, easy-to-prepare nutritious recipes.

For more information on the classes, or to register for upcoming SNAP-Ed classes, call Lucia Bueno-Valdez at (970) 564-4174, or stop by the Montezuma County CSU Extension Office, 109 W. Main Street, Room 102, Cortez, CO.
