A few months after Mesa Verde Motorsports changed hands, the company is having a grand opening in honor of its new ownership.

Jason Spruell resigned as marshal of the town of Mancos back in October to buy and operate the business, which had been started by his grandparents under the name Gene Patton Motor Co. He assumed operations in November, and the grand opening is set for April 13.

“It’s been great,” Spruell said. “It’s a new experience. I like helping, I’ve always loved helping people out, and this way I can help them find a new toy, new work vehicle, whatever their needs are.”

The business was founded by his grandparents, Gene and Thelma Patton, back in the 1960s, although it didn’t move to its current location until June 1970.

“I grew up around here,” he said.

His grandparents sold the business to David Hansen 13 years ago, and when he in turn decided to retire and sell the company, Spruell decided it was the opportune moment for him to assume control of the family business.

“When I heard that the new owner wanted to sell it, I wanted to get it back in the family,” Spruell said.

He has had to get used to changes in the industry, Spruell said. He grew up around motorcycles, but in recent years side-by-sides – multi-person, off-road “utility vehicles” – have been increasing in popularity.

“Now with the side-by-side, you can put up to six people on a side-by-side, depending on which one you get,” Spruell said. “So I think it’s more family-oriented now.”

The business itself also has some changes, Spruell said. They have increased the selection of accessories, he said, including more fuel tanks, helmets, and tires.

The grand opening will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, at Mesa Verde Motorsports, 2120 S. Broadway. Refreshments will be served, Spruell said.
