Showcasing dedication to the track in the midst of their spring break, several Mancos High School athletes competed and performed well at the Bobcat Invitational track meet in Bloomfield on March 30.

Among the top finishers for the boys’ team was junior throwing sensation Caden Showalter, who finished first in the discus (140 feet, 3 inches) and the shot put (146 feet, 1 inch). Joining Caden Showalter at the top of the standings in both events was his brother, freshman Connor Showalter, who placed second in the shot discus (130 feet, 5 inches) and shot put (43 feet, 8 inches).

Other first-place finishers for Mancos included senior Caden Galloway, who cleared a bar set at 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump, and Anthony Medina, who placed first in the long jump (20 feet, 10½ inches) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.31).

Freshman Chase Moore continued his season-long trend of solid finishes in the jumping event by finishing second in the high jump (5 feet, 8 inches) and eighth in the long jump (17 feet, 6 inches). Senior Hunter Hoover finished fifth in the high jump (5 feet 4 inches), and freshman Coleman Hoover placed eighth in the triple jump (31 feet).

In the running events, Mancos was led by freshman Edgar Hernandez, who finished third in the 800-meter run (2:17.52) and fifth in the 1,600-meter run (5:10.85). Junior Breccen Morelli crossed the line fourth in the 400-meter dash (53.90) and eighth in the 200-meter dash (25.24).

Thanks to the slew of impressive individual finishes by its athletes, the Mancos boys finished third overall in the team standings of the nine-team meet behind team-champion Bloomfield and second-place Kirtland High School.

On the girls’ side, Mancos was led individually by Desi Dainty-Guilfoyle, who placed second in the 100-meter dash (14.39) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (30.32). Sophomore Grace Manning crossed the line fourth in the 800-meter run (2:40.05) and the 1,600-meter run (5:56.30), and Sage Low placed ninth in the long jump (11 feet, 11 inches).

The Mancos girls finished seventh in the team standings of the nine-team meet. Kirtland High School won the girls’ team title.

Next up for both Mancos track teams will be the Abel Velasquez Invitational in Ignacio on April 6.
