The days are getting longer and the weather's getting warmer, which means summer must be right around the corner. Bring up summer at the library, and thoughts turn to long afternoons in the shade with a good book. Summer also means it's time for our annual Summer Reading Program and lots of fun! This year's theme is "Dig Into Reading" and we've got a plethora of exciting programs to look forward to:

On June 12, David Gonzales, head of geology at Fort Lewis College, will be in-house with several hands-on demonstrations to show how geology really rocks. If you've ever wondered how water moves through the earth, or how volcanoes work, then you'll want to be here!

On June 19, archaeologist Patricia Lacey will come to teach us about archaeology and the ancient southwest. Participants will eat traditional foods, construct corrugated pottery, create "rock" art and learn about the tools archaeologists use.

On June 26, Ashley Dove from Beads and Beyond will come enlighten attendees about the lesser seen realms of fairies, gnomes and pixies. Spark your imagination while making fairy and wizard wands and creating fairy houses on library property.

On July 3, Erin Bohm from the School Garden Project will share her knowledge of those creepers and crawlers that live below your feet. We'll be studying some worms, releasing ladybugs, and planting flowers. The Town of Mancos will also have their "big diggers" on hand for little ones to investigate.

The Summer Reading Program is open to all children ages 5-12. Younger children may attend if accompanied by an adult. All children enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to participate in the Reading Contest Bingo, with prizes for progress and completion. Each program will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wholesome snacks will be provided for each program courtesy of Care and Share.

If you have questions or would like additional details, please contact the Mancos Public Library at 533-7600. For those teens and adults who would also like to join in the fun, ask about our other summer reading programs. We look forward to an exciting summer of fun and reading!

Lee Hallberg is director of the Mancos Public Library.
