Several former Conoco and Shell gas stations and Giant convenience stores in Southwest Colorado are now sporting Speedway signs.
The new moniker comes as Marathon Petroleum Corp., Speedway’s parent company, completes integration of some 3,200 gas stations and convenience stores it acquired when it completed a $23.3 billion acquisition of San Antonio, Texas-based Andeavor in October 2018.
Stephanie Griffith, spokeswoman with Findlay, Ohio-based Marathon Petroleum, said Thursday that Marathon was completing the integration and conversion of 12 retail locations in Southwest Colorado to the Speedway brand.
The 12 outlets are in Bayfield, Cortez, Durango, Hermosa and Pagosa Springs.
Marathon Petroleum Corp., the fifth-largest crude-oil refiner in the United States, differentiates its retail business, Speedway, from its gasoline and diesel distribution brand, Marathon. Marathon brand fuel is sold at more than 5,100 independently owned locations across 18 states.
Griffith said during the conversion process of the Colorado outlets, customers will see new Speedway exterior and interior signs.
Also, Speedway plans to upgrade credit-card chip readers, adding enhanced security features, including encrypted credit and debit card technology and increased payment security features to help keep consumer personal information more secure and safe from skimming devices.
Griffith said employees at stations will remain the same.
The firm will introduce its Speedy Rewards card, which is the brand’s loyalty program. The loyalty program provides customers an opportunity to earn free merchandise and beverages by accruing points on purchases that can be redeemed for merchandise and gift cards.
Customers will be able to transfer their existing loyalty points from other brands to a new Speedy Rewards card, Griffith said.
