Police have identified the victim of a car crash who died early Sunday in west Durango as Kaila Craig, 19, of Durango.
Craig was driving east on U.S. Highway 160 near the Twin Buttes subdivision when she lost control of her 1996 Subaru station wagon, crossed the centerline and hit a semitrailer that was heading west, said Cmdr. Ray Shupe, spokesman with the Durango Police Department. The crash occurred about 4:45 a.m. Sunday.
Speed was a factor in the crash, Shupe said. Craig was traveling 98 mph when she crossed the centerline, he said.
The driver of the semitrailer, Rodrigo Juarez-Armendariz of Denver, was uninjured, Shupe said.
An autopsy will determine if alcohol or drugs also played a factor in the crash, he said.
Craig was a freshman at Fort Lewis College majoring in biochemistry and biology, said Lauren Savage, spokeswoman for the college.
