A 47-year-old Aztec woman died Wednesday morning after a crash on U.S. Highway 550 near the Colorado-New Mexico state line.

New Mexico State Police said in a news release the crash was reported just before 9 a.m. Wednesday at mile marker 172, north of Aztec.

Police say a 2006 Toyota Scion was headed north on Highway 550 when the driver made a U-turn at the intersection of County Road 2105 in San Juan County. The vehicle was struck from behind by a 2018 Kia Soul that was traveling south on Highway 550.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as Amy Huaman, died as a result of the crash.

A 54-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Toyota was airlifted to an area hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, New Mexico State Police said.

The driver of the Kia, a 23-year-old man, did not suffer injuries.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said, and it appears everyone involved in the incident was wearing a seat belt.
