The Montezuma County Fair, a celebration of the county's rural values, runs through the weekend at the fairgrounds east of Cortez.
Visit the fair to see livestock - from poultry and rabbits through steers - raised by 4-H and FFA competitors, and then come back on Saturday to bid on an animal.
View the other exhibits, including sewing and crafts, flower arrangements, garden produce, baked goods, jams and jellies. Stop by the concession stand. Attend the entertainment.
Trucks carrying carnival equipment rolled through Cortez on Tuesday, and the cool evenings offer a good opportunity to take in the view from the top of a ferris wheel or pick a ride that requires more courage and a stronger stomach.
