A Durango woman spent the night under the stars after becoming separated from party about 1 p.m. Saturday in the Grizzly Peak area on the border between San Juan and Dolores counties.
Ron Corkish with La Plata Search and Rescue said the woman was able to walk out on her own uninjured about 4 p.m. Sunday after finding another party of hikers around 1 p.m. The hikers she discovered helped get her to a spot where she could get cellphone reception and inform her family and authorities that she was safe and sound, Corkish said.
“The one good thing about living in this part of the world is that everyone wants to help,” he said.
Corkish said the woman was from Durango, but he didn’t have her name or age.
About 16 searchers were involved in the mission from Dolores County Search and Rescue, San Juan County Search and Rescue and La Plata County Search and Rescue.
It did not rain overnight on Grizzly Peak, Corkish said. And during the day Sunday the peak saw only an occasional sprinkle. The low overnight was 41 degrees in the Grizzly Peak search area, he said.
