The Dolores Ranger District has opened two temporary logging roads to allow firewood gatherers access to downed aspen and spruce. There is aspen and spruce slash that is scattered on the ground throughout the logged areas. The roads include Forest Service roads 556Q (upper Lost Canyon) and 316A (Madden Peak). These roads will remain open for firewood collection through Oct. 7.

In addition, the Carlyle Point firewood area, on Forest Service road 525, has ponderosa pine logs that have been cut, limbed and piled near the road.

Permits are required for firewood collection and all rules and regulations in the San Juan firewood brochure apply.

For maps, permits and information, visit Dolores Public Lands Office at 29211 Highway 184, from 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Firewood permits also may be purchased at Dolores Food Market, 400 Railroad Ave. Dolores, and City Market, 508 Main St., Cortez.
