The Mancos Library set up an informative display of books, articles and photos to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, Aug. 28, 1963.
The march brought together 250,000 people from all parts of the U.S. The anniversary was given extensive coverage in magazines, on TV and radio news. The White House had a celebratory musicfest.
The community of Mancos began celebrating the national holiday of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday four years ago with a free full-course breakfast at the community center. It was initially organized by Nadia, an Americorps Volunteer living in town. Photos and books are displayed at the entrance. The large wall mirror has paper and markers for people to write what their dreams are.
Local food producers donated sausage, eggs, coffee, pancakes and all the trimmings. Each year, on the night before, volunteers set up tables, chairs, prepare ingredients and place inspiring table centerpiece quotes. Volunteers take shifts of final cooking, serving and cleanup the next morning. Because it's a national holiday, many children are there, and some assist with dishwashing and cleanup.
Over the years, enough money has been donated in a jar that the organizers now are able to purchase the local food. This year's menu was pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, plain and cheesy grits, orange juice and coffee, plus homemade trimmings. The free breakfast serves more than 150 attendees, and the organizers are proud to be a part of this celebration.
