In this year’s municipal election, four open seats on the Mancos Town Board will be contested.
The election will happen April 7, and interested candidates have until Jan. 27 to circulate petitions and obtain signatures to be placed on the ballot.
Currently, the seven-member board includes Mayor Queenie Barz, Mayor Pro Tem Fred Brooks, and trustees Craig Benally, Ed Hallam, Betsy Harrison, Brent McWhirter, and Cindy Simpson.
The terms for Barz, Benally, Hallam, and Simpson are up this spring, and none of them is term-limited, according to Town Administrator Heather Alvarez.
The mayor is elected as a separate office, while the mayor pro tem is chosen by the board after the election, Alvarez said.
Generally, board members are elected to serve a four-year term, but if trustees resign in the middle of their term, that may shift the schedule. Last election in 2018, there was one extra person running, leading to a two-year term for Simpson – which is why she needs to run once again, according to Alvarez.
Nomination petitions can be picked up at Town Hall, and completed petitions should be returned by 5 p.m. Jan. 27.
