Wednesday, Jan. 15

The Mancos Community Drum Circle starts again Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Bring your drum and build community at Kaleidoscope, 233 Park St.

Thursday, Jan. 16

There will be a presentation going over judging changes that will take affect this year in the 2014 Montezuma County Fair in the Community Open Class Food Preservation. The presentation will be held at the Montezuma County Extension Office, 109 W. Main, Rm 102 on Jan. 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Call 565-3123 to register ahead of time.

The Montezuma County Democratic Party Central Committee is having a meeting on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. at The Spruce Tree Espresso Shop on Main St. in Cortez. Call Ric Plese if you have any questions.

Friday, Jan. 17

The Mancos Public Library will have a "Science Friday" series with a visit from the Durango Discovery Museum on Jan. 17 at 10 a.m. Professor Gogglesmith and Beaker will perform chemistry and try to find a cure for the common zit. Saturday, Jan. 18

Yoga for athletes workshop at Heart and Core Yoga Studio, 30 W. Main St. in Cortez on Jan. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Learn to use yoga to enhance your performance while soothing aches and pains. All levels welcome, no yoga experience necessary. Cost is $20. Call 739-0547 for more information.

Join San Jaun Mountains Association (SJMA) for a family exploration on Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon for some fun outside at Boggy Draw in Dolores. For ages 4 and up, accompanied by an adult. Monday, Jan. 20

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20, breakfast will be served from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Mt. Lookout Grange. Breakfast will be held at 680 Grand Avenue and is free. Donations are accepted.

Thursday, Jan. 23

The Montezuma County Historical Society will sponsor a History Symposium about the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. in Hampton Hall of the First United Methodist Church at 515 N. Park St. The presentation given by Mr. Lew Matis is titled Four Summits, Five Counties, Six Rivers. There is no charge and the public is invited.

Saturday, Jan. 25

This months Monthly Yoga "Grange Benefit" will be held 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Jan. 25. Donation only, all levels are welcome. All proceeds will benefit Mt. Lookout Grange. Bring towel/mat and water. Refrain from eating an hour before.

Yoga for total beginners will Lily Russo will be held at Kaleidoscope, 233 Park St. in Mancos from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 25. Arrive in comfy clothes that you can stretch in, with an empty belly and take a water bottle. If you have a mat, bring it, otherwise one will be provided to you.

Sunday, Jan. 26

William Hendrickson will discuss the history of oil and gas in Montezuma County on Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the gallery at the Cortez Cultural Center. Free to members, $5 to others.

Movie Monday's at the Mancos Public Library at 4 p.m. every Monday for the month of January: Jan. 6 - Turbo (1 hr. 36 min.), Jan. 13 - 2 episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender (1 hr.), Jan. 20 - Library Closed, MLK Day, Jan. 27 - Planes (1 hr. 32 min.). Saturday, Feb. 1

The Cortez Cultural Center's annual Sweetheart Ball fundraiser will be held Feb. 1 at the Cortez Elks. This year's theme is "Abracadabra Sweetheart Ball" featuring dinner, auction, magic entertainment and dancing. Donations for the auction are being accepted Jan. 7 - 29 and can be taken to the center at 25 N. Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gift certificates faxed to 565-4075. Friday, Feb. 7

The 28th Annual Chocolate Fantasia, a fundraiser benefiting the Volunteers of America Southwest Safehouse and the Durango Community Shelter, will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, at the La Plata County Fairgrounds (2500 Main Avenue), from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This year's theme is "Chocolat De Paris." Tickets are available throughout the Durango community as well as at the door. For more information call Volunteers of America at 259-1021.

First Thursday

Second Sunday

Mancos Community Dinners will be the Second Sunday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Mt. Lookout Grange, 680 Grand Ave, Mancos. This is a pay -what-you-can event. All ages are welcome. Main dishes will be provided. Participants are can bring a dish to share, ideas, a plate, silverware and instruments, too. For more information, call Gretchen at (509) 830-4380.

Second Tuesday

The Mancos Water Conservancy District will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month at 42599 Road N off of Road 42.

Second Thursday

Republican Women of Montezuma County invite the public to meet at noon every second Thursday at Shilo's Steakhouse at 5 Veach St., in Cortez. For information, call Rosemarie Beall at 564-1576.

A Free legal self-help clinic for Montezuma County parties without an attorney will be held the second Thursday of every month from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St. Volunteer attorneys will assist one-on-one, via computer link. First come first-served basis.

First and Third Thursday's

Planning committee for the 10th Annual Ute Mountain-Mesa Verde Birding Festival meets at 10 a.m. on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month upstairs at the Cortez Cultural Center. Anyone interested in volunteering is welcome to attend. Call 565-1151 for details.

Fourth Thursday

A new Republican woman's club has been formed locally called 4 Corners Republican Women's Club. Regular meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of the month at 11:30 a.m. at the Cortez Elk's Lodge. For more information, please call 565-2197.

The Kiwanis Club of Mesa Verde meets at noon each Tuesday at Shiloh's. For more information, email sue@simmonssecondchanceranch.com.

The Mancos Public Library, 211 W. First St., will be offering Little People Storytime on Tuesday's at 10:30 a.m. Previously Storytime was offered on Wednesday's. The program is geared towards children ages 2 - 6 but all ages are welcome. For more information call 533-7600.

Freestyle Defensive Arts is held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at the Community Center in Mancos. Kids Freestyle Defensive Arts class, for ages 8 to 15, will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday. For more information, call instructor Brian Williams at 903-5576.

Karate "Ryukoku Seidokan" is held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Community Center in Mancos. Ages 5 to 10 is held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and costs $5 each class. Every Saturday

The Mancos Indoor Flea Market is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday at the old hardware store in Mancos, 192 S. Main St. To become a vendor, call Queenie Barz at 749-9320. The booth fee is $15 per weekend, along with insurance and vendor license charges.
