After years of hard work, former Dolores High School athlete Tyler Weir is well on his way to realizing a lifelong dream.

Pomona High School senior Weir verbally committed on Jan. 20 to play football at South Dakota State University, a Division 1-AA school in Brookings, S.D.

A perennial power at the Division 1-AA level, South Dakota State finished last season with a 9-4 record, bowing out in the second round of the playoffs to Eastern Washington University.

"The process started when offensive line coach John Flynn came in after Thanksgiving and talked to me," said Weir. "They told me a little bit about their program. I went up (Jan. 19) and committed (Jan. 20).

Weir said South Dakota State's family atmosphere and Brooking's small-town feel factored heavily into his commitment.

A three-sport star at Dolores High School for three seasons, Weir transferred to Pamona High School for his senior season.

"Moving from a 1A program to a 5A program, the competition week in and week out is amazing," said Weir. "I had amazing coaches down in Dolores, and that continued at Pamona."
