Panthers junior Seager Oliver, shown earlier this season, will look to build on his impressive season this weekend.

Generally speaking, local wrestling fans must travel several hours to see Montezuma-Cortez High School grapplers face off against the state’s best.

Not this weekend, however.

Playing host to the Southwest League Dual Tournament, M-CHS will welcome top wrestlers from Durango, Montrose, Grand Junction, Grand Junction Central and Fruita Monument for what promises to be a top wrestling event.

Scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Feb. 8, duals will take place on three mats, thus offering those in attendance the opportunity to witness non-stop action.

“There are going to be some great matches,” said M-CHS athletic director Stacey Hall. “This is a great venue for the kids to be showcased.”

Leading local wrestlers competing in the Duals will be M-CHS junior Seager Oliver who is currently the top-ranked 170-pound wrestler in Colorado’s 4A classification.

Also likely to deliver solid performances will be M-CHS juniors Levi Gross (132- pounds) and Justice Ramos (145-pounds), who, together, have been rounding into form as of late.

Sophomore Victor Perez (heavyweight) and freshman Josh Ramos (126-pounds) will round out the M-CHS lineup.

“We have top quality wrestlers and I think that we have an opportunity to get all five of our kids to the state tournament,” said Hall.

Duals will last throughout the day with the final matchups scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to come out and support local wrestlers as they defend their home gym against what promises to be extremely tough competition.
