Lady Jays struggle through tough week

Playing through a season defined by inconsistency, the Mancos Bluejays girls basketball team continues to seek a winning formula.

Norwood powers past Mancos

Kicking off the weekend against the high-powered Norwood Mavericks on Feb. 7, the Bluejays flashed potential before losing 54-29 at home.

Playing surprisingly well against one of the San Juan Basin League's top teams, the Bluejays trailed 6-2 after one quarter and 15-10 entering the half.

After a solid third quarter, the Bluejays trailed 32-23 entering the fourth and for a few moments, it seemed as if a late-game run was possible.

Norwood star Jordan Williams made sure that no run would happen however, exploding for several fourth quarter baskets to boost her team to victory.

"We played three quarters with them," said Bluejays' head coach Mallory Morgan. "The fourth quarter, we let the Williams girl take over."

Even with the defeat however, Morgan was encouraged by her team's progress.

"We played much better against them the second time than we did the first time," said Morgan.

Leading the Bluejays in scoring during the loss were senior Whitney Gustafson and junior Taylor Goff, who scored nine points each.

Bluejays crushed by Ridgway

Hoping to bounce back in Ridgway on Feb. 8, the Bluejays struggled against a tough opponent, losing 54-23.

Trailing throughout a game that was never close, the Bluejays struggled to contain Ridgway's offense, which consistently converted high-percentage shots.

"Defensively, we couldn't figure it out," said Morgan.

Although the Bluejays finally found a rhythm in the second half, late buckets turned out to be too little too late.

"They are super good," said Morgan of Ridgway.

Hoping to improve their 3-11 record, the Bluejays will next match up against Ignacio on Feb. 14 for what appears to be a winnable game.

"Hopefully the girls come ready to go," said Morgan. I think that (Ignacio) is beatable if we play our game."
