Opening the high school golf season with the best round of her high school career, Kiselya Plewe served notice that she may be one of Colorado’s top prep golfers.
In doing so, the Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore, with help from teammates Keyana Matteson and Abigail Smith, helped the Dolores High School golf team take a big step towards relevancy.
Playing on March 17 at the Adobe Creek National Golf Course, Plewe was nothing short of spectacular, carding a 5-under score of 67 to win the tournament’s individual title by ten strokes.
Setting the stage for the impressive round were several early birdies that helped Plewe gain confidence and settle into a rhythm.
“What was working for Kiselya was that her attitude was really good,” said Dolores head coach Jeff Carr. “She felt confident, calm and she just lit it up.”
Also turning in a solid day for Dolores was Keyana Matteson, who carded a career best score of 113.
Rounding out the team’s competitors was Abigail Smith, who, playing in her first high school tournament, shot a 154.
“This was (Abigail’s) first tournament ever,” explained Carr. “She swung the club well.”
As a team, Dolores shot a combined score of 334, which was good enough to place them in the middle of the 18-team tournament.
According to Carr, the team finished ahead of all the junior varsity, as well as several varsity teams competing in the tournament.
Montrose High School finished first in the tournament with a team score of 243.
“We had a fantastic day,” said Carr. “We exceeded our expectations.”
With one tournament under their belts, the Dolores Golf Team will return to practice in preparation for their next tournament, which will take place at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, N.M., on April 7.
