Competing for the first time since March 17, the Dolores High School girls golf team looked vastly improved.

Battling windy conditions at Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, N.M., on April 7, the Bears finished third in the three-team tournament behind Durango High School and team-champion Kirtland Central High School.

Winning her second individual tournament title in as many tries was Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore Kiselya Plewe, who shot a team-best round of 85.

(Kiselya) is playing terrific," said Bears head coach Jeff Carr. "The conditions were tough, and the wind was howling, but she held it together and ground out the round."

Also turning in a solid round for the Bears was Montezuma-Cortez High School sophomore Keyana Matteson, who shot an 18-hole total of 121.

"(Keyana) hit it well," said Carr. "It was a difficult course."

Especially impressive for the Bears was the play of home-schooled sophomore Abigail Smith, who shot a career-best round of 124. The round represented a remarkable improvement for Smith, who shot a 154 in her first tournament of the year.

Rounding out the Bears competitors, Dolores High School sophomore Selah Kabakoro shot a 132 in her first-ever tournament.

"(Selah) did awesome," said Carr.

Looking to continue making rapid improvements, the Bears will next compete in Montrose on April 14-15.

"It's such a young team," said Carr. "We have two people who have started playing golf this calendar year. We just have learn how to play pressure golf where every shot counts."
