What are counterprotesters so afraid of?

I am appalled and saddened by the behavior of these people, who seem to think that quietly expressing the hope that we can all live peacefully together should cause such bitterness and invective (“Counterprotesters confront Walk for Justice: ‘You’re not welcome here,’” Sept. 26). What do the counterprotesters hate so much that they are willing to advocate driving the peace walkers out of town, believing they don’t belong here, that it’s wrong to be gay? I cannot fathom why they feel this need to intimidate, to confront, to accuse, to threaten. Is this what America has become?
