Board voices backing for marijuana

The town board directed the town administrator on April 9 to begin researching marijuana regulations that could be put in place if the local ban on recreational marijuana sales is allowed to expire in June.

Most board members, including members elected April 1, voiced support for moving toward lifting the ban on recreational marijuana because of the potential to increase sales tax.

"I think we are going to lose if we wait on this whole thing on the financial side," said Trustee Will Stone.

The town voted in overwhelming support to allow the town to impose a flat fee of up to $10 on the sales of recreational marijuana. The fees would not impact medical marijuana.

Town Marshal John Cox voiced his opposition to allowing the moratorium on recreational marijuana to expire because it is still illegal under federal law.
