Workmen from Mountain Valley Construction last week welded together a new culvert pipe that will be installed under Colorado Highway 184 near County Road K.6.
The project has limited highway traffic to one lane periodically, said the Project Engineer Gwen Eberhart from Yeh and Associates. The pipe will protect the stability of the roadway and improve drainage.
The workmen are replacing two 40-year-old corrugated metal pipes with a new pipe that is 90 feet long and 3 feet in diameter.
The workmen aligned the pipe using jacks in square holes beneath the pipe.
The new pipe will be installed using compressed air to drive the pipe through the ground.
Also at this site, crews will also fill an unused cattle underpass to remedy the roadside erosion it has caused, according to a press release from the Colorado Department of Transportation. Mountain Valley Construction was contracted $849,050 for the project, a press release stated.
The project is scheduled to be finished at the end of May.
