Although not quite sure what her future holds, Abby Lock envisions perhaps one day teaching abroad or working as a translator.

The Montezuma-Cortez High School senior was recently awarded the prestigious and valuable Boettcher scholarship. The full-ride merit-based scholarship will cover virtually all her college expenses when she enrolls at Fort Lewis College this fall.

“I could not be more grateful to the Boettcher Foundation for granting me this opportunity to pursue my passions in life,” said Lock. “It is wonderful to know that the foundation is supporting me in my educational endeavors.”

One of only 40 2014 Boettcher Foundation Scholars, Lock said she intends to pursue an English degree. She’s also interested in Spanish as well as gender studies.

Boettcher Foundation president and executive director Tim Schultz said this year’s scholars represent some of the most promising young people in Colorado.

“The goal of the Boettcher scholarship program is to keep the best talent in Colorado here by connecting them with the outstanding opportunities offered by our in-state institutions,” Schultz said. “We know that these students will become leaders on their campuses and continue serving others with their gifts, thereby contributing to the greater Colorado community.”

More than 1,600 students applied for the scholarship. Lock’s award includes full tuition, fees, a book allowance and even an annual stipend for living expenses. The scholarship is granted for eight semesters.

“Abigail really stood out for us with her accomplishments both in and out of the classroom,” said scholarship program director Tiffany Anderson. “We’re proud to have her representing the Boettcher family.”

Editor-in-chief of the M-CHS newspaper, Panther Press, Lock said she was thankful for her wonderful teachers at the high school for encouraging her academic pursuits.

“My teachers have inspired me not only in the academic realm, but also in a way that has helped me to better myself as a human being,” said Lock.

She also praised the staff from the School Community Youth Collaborative.

“SCYC helped me to reach a place in my life where I am driven to serve others and the community in which I live,” Lock added.

In its 61st year, the Boettcher program has awarded more than 2,300 scholarships.

Lock’s parents are Roberta (Bobbi) and Louis Lock.
