The Cortez Public Library’s summer reading program runs May 22 to Aug. 19.

It’s an incentive program for kids to read or be read to. Each 8 hours they complete makes them eligible to come in and choose a book. At 32 accrued hours they get a prize; 64 hours, a T-shirt (one per child while supplies last).

This year, the program sponsors a big prize drawing at the end of summer.

According to scholastic.com “a break from books can mean big losses for at-risk readers” and “one summer off can sometimes mean a whole school year of struggling academic performance.”

The Our Family Entertainment Programs run on Wednesdays, at 2 p.m., June 11 through July 16.

The lineup

June 11, Playground Theatre

June 18, 2 p.m.: Magic with Eli

June 25, 2 p.m.: The Geek Squad of the Durango Discovery Museum

July 2, 2 p.m.: Dan Crow Concoctions

July 9, 2 p.m.: Markie Scholz of Dragons are too Seldom

July 16, 2 p.m.: Big Bubble from the MAT! (Millibo Art Theater)

The preschool Storytime program continues every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Older children may join for a craft at 11:15 a.m. We also offer a summer Storytime at the Farmers Market every Saturday morning, weather permitting.

The library is at 202 N. Park St., Cortez, Colo. More information: 970-565-8117 for more information.
