Crews stem advance of Colorado Springs grass fire

Flames rise above roof tops as a wildfire burns near Bear Creek Regional Park on the west side of Colorado Springs on Thursday. About 235 homes were evacuated near the park as firefighters battled the fire on the ground and in the air.

COLORADO SPRINGS – Fire crews have contained 50% of a grass fire that briefly threatened hundreds of homes in southwest Colorado Springs. Full containment was expected Friday.

The fire erupted in dry grass near Bear Creek Regional Park on Thursday and forced temporary evacuation orders for 235 homes, KOAA-TV reports. Crews backed by air support stemmed the advance of the 23-acre blaze and were conducting mop-up operations Friday.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
