Another of the new and highly interesting types of entertainment which spectators can look forward to for Frontier Days on June 22 and 23 will be a Black Powder Shoot with advocates of the sport being invited from a large area. This event will take place over two days and has two shoots of special interest which are known as the Seneca Run and the Cannon Shoot.
George Buck, present district attorney for the 22nd Judicial District, was named by the Republican party of Montezuma and Dolores Counties as their candidate for district attorney. His name will be on the primary ballot this fall.
At the meeting of the Board of Education for the Dolores School District Friday night, the resignation of Arthur Hayes was accepted. Hayes, industrial arts teacher, will be going to Delta to work as a full time carpenter. A motion passed to hire Terry Winet as a kindergarten teacher following which the board recessed and then heard from the lawyers representing the teachers concerning teacher contracts.
Superintendent J. D. Hathaway this week reported that they are in the process of filling all the vacant positions at the school except mathematics by the middle of next week. They have over 700 applications after advertising only two vacancies to date. Applications are coming in at an average of 12 a day.
Raft races come to Dolores again this year with announcement by the Montezuma Jaycees that they will sponsor the always popular event on Sunday, June 9th with the traditional race from Stoner Bridge to the Fourth Street Bridge in Dolores. Rules of the race and entry blanks for rafters will be found in many of the sporting goods and other stores in the area and additional information is also available from Jaycee member Wesley Fowler at the Quality Book Store in Cortez.
