A 26-year-old Durango man who fled from police more than a week ago was caught Wednesday afternoon and is in law enforcement custody, according to the Durango Police Department.

Freedom Anderson was first contacted Jan. 18 by law enforcement for a felony warrant at the Durango Post Office, 222 W. Eighth St., but reportedly took off. The vehicle was seen again in north Durango and Anderson allegedly crashed the vehicle into a residence near Eighth Street and East Eight Avenue.

Anderson is then suspected of fleeing on foot.

The Durango Police Department said in a statement that around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday officers stopped a white van near East Fourth Avenue and College Drive. Anderson was inside the van and taken into custody without incident, DPD said.

DPD said it had a large police presence in the area and closed the entire block for almost 30 minutes during the incident.

Anderson was arrested on the felony warrant for vehicular eluding, a Class 5 felony. He was booked into the La Plata County Jail on $5,000 bail.

Requests for comment to DPD were not immediately returned Thursday morning.
