The crash, reported at 12:25 p.m., involved an Escalade SUV and a Silver Dodge pickup pulling a gooseneck trailer at mile marker 51, said Colorado State Trooper Gary Cutler.
The driver of the Dodge was allegedly at fault and was issued a summons, Cutler said, but information about the charge was not immediately available.
The driver was injured and taken to Southwest Memorial Hospital.
Details of the crash were not included in the initial report, and the case remained under investigation.
The trailer pulled by the Dodge had a blown tire, Cutler said. The vehicles ended up on the shoulder of the highway. Traffic continued in both directions as rescuers and law enforcement worked the scene.
First responders noted drivers traveling at a high rate of speed as emergency workers worked on the side of the road to clear and investigate the crash. Cutler said Colorado’s Slow Down or Move Over law requires drivers to move into another lane away from rescue personnel if they can do so lawfully and safely. If not possible to move into another lane, drivers must slow down by 25 mph if the speed limit is less than 45 mph, and by at least 20 mph if the speed limit is 45 mph or higher.
“Even with flashing lights, and police and fire vehicles on the side of the road, people are just flying by. For everyone’s safety, please slow it down,” said a member of the Mancos Fire Department.
Failing to move over or slow down could result in a ticket for careless driving, or a more serious penalty if injury is caused for not complying with the Slow Down or Move Over law.
