Montezuma-Cortez led by Bayles in win at Bayfield

The Bayfield High School girls basketball team could taste a victory going to the fourth quarter Saturday. Montezuma-Cortez snatched it away.

The Wolverines led 32-30 on their home floor after three evenly-contested quarters against a Class 3A Intermountain League rival on Saturday in Bayfield. But Montezuma-Cortez (2-3, 1-2 IML) outscored BHS 13-9 in the final eight minutes to play to secure a 43-41 road win and keep BHS (0-6, 0-3 IML) winless so far this season.

Junior captain Justina Bayles led the Panthers with a game-high 23 points. Sophomore forward Carlie McClellan added another eight points, while Savannah Haselroth finished with seven.

Rachel Morris led Bayfield with 11 points, while Madison Wells had 10 and Cayanne Carlson scored nine.

The Panthers will host Class 4A Durango (2-4) at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Bayfield is in action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at home once more against Pagosa Springs (6-1, 3-1 IML).
